I Whitmel Hooks, of the State of North Carolina in duplin County, being of sound and perfect mind and memory, Blessed be God, do this 31st day of October in the year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred and ninety five, make and publish this my last will and testament in manner following. That is to say: First, I give and bequeath to my well beloved Father Thos Hooks my black mare. I also give to my beloved brothers and sisters to wit: William Hooks, Thomas Hooks, Hillary Hooks, and children, Charles Hooks, David Hooks, Levina Slocumb, Polly Slocomb, Fanney Watkins and Susanna Hooks all my stock of horses and hogs, to wit: one three year old mare named Pal, and one two year old (?) named Bounce. Nine head of yar old hogs and one sow to be equally divided amongst my brothers and sisters as above mentioned and Hillary Hooks children and I hereby make and ordain my brother Charles Hooks Executor of this my last will and testament. In witness whereof I the said Whitmel Hooks have to this my last will and testament set my hand and seal the day and year above written. Signed, sealed, published and ordered by the said Whitmel Hooks the testator as his last will and testament in presence of us – Test Fri K. Barfield, Thos Hooks, Susanna Barfield.
