Will of George Williams ~ 1797

  In the name of God, Amen I George Williams of Southampton County and State of Virginia being in perfect mind & memory thanks be to God for it and knowing it is appointed for all men to die, do make and ordain this my last will & testament principally and first of all I recommend my soul into the hands of Almighty God that gave it and my body to the ground to be buried in a Christian like manner and as touching such worldly estate which it has pleased God to bless me with in this life, I give in the following manner, viz: I give to my son Absolom Williams, two hundred and ninety acres of land which he now has in his possession joining the land and plantation whereon my son Charles Williams now lives in Hertford County North Carolina also one negro boy named Sam to him & his disposial. I give to my son Solomon Williams five shillings current money. I give to my son Charles Williams five shillings current money. I leave my three old negroes the priviledge of choosing their masters after my death on paying to my estate Sam the sum of twelve pounds, Phillis the sum of Forty Pounds & Rose the sum of Thirty Pounds, all the rest of my slaves & estate let it be in any kind or quality whatsoever I leave to be sold on six months credit and the money arising by such sale to be equally divided amongst my children hereafter named that is to say Absolom Williams, Elisosha Grantham, Janet Story, Elizabeth Darden and Nancy Sandifur to them and their heirs. I do hereby appoint my son Absolom Williams my whole & sole Executor to this my last will, revoking all other wills before by me made ratifying this and no other to be my last will and testament. In witness whereof I the said George Williams hath hereunto set my hand & seal this twenty fourth day of August and in the year of our Lord Christ one thousand seven hundred & ninety seven.
