I am interested in "...an indictment for murder, tried before Strange, J., at Duplin, on the last circuit. The prisoner was convicted, and a motion for a new trial being overruled, and judgement of death pronounced, he appealed." Others involved (at Raleigh, we believe--think we'll have to have our lawyer read some of this!) were Justice DANIEL, Chief Justice HENDERSON, and Justice RUFFIN. THE STATE v. ISAAC D. LIPSEY. This case took place in December Term of 1832. Hardy NEWTON was a material witness for the prisoner. We believe that Hardy was Isaac first cousin once removed. Isaac D. LIPSEY was the son of Isaac LIPSEY and Betsey NEWTON of Onslow County, NC. Besey's father was Daniel NEWTON (also of Onslow--d. 1832). Daniel's brother Elijah (d. 1794, Onslow) was the father of Hardy, most likely. We are very interested in knowing more about this case--at the county level. As we read it, it appears as though an individual from Duplin County, NC, was murdered. Interestingly enough, Isaac D. LIPSEY had been briefly we to Sindena (SURNAMES: LIPSEY NEWTON STRANGE HENDERSON RUFFIN DANIEL MARSHALL NAME: Matthew Lipsey EMAIL: lipsey@pilot.msu.edu DATE: Dec 04 1998 URL: http://pilot.msu.edu/~lipsey QRYTEXT: I am interested in "...an indictment for murder, tried before Strange, J., at Duplin, on the last circuit. Would like to compare notes with other GOFF researchers. Samuel GOFF(b.c. 1780-1790) appears in the 1820 Emmanual Co., GA census(adjacent to a John) and then the 1830 - 1840 Irwin Co., GA census. He lives near many HUNTER families in Irwin and his sons marry into those families. Other area Goffs (William Cooper Goff, for ex.) have been traced to Duplin Co. It is suspected that he, as well, is from Duplin Co. but the connection has not yet been made. Can anyone help? I have the 1820-30-40-50 Irwin Co., Ga census records and will assist anyone tracking Duplin ancestors to that area.

a#BELLBELLm#MORGANMORGANm#WESTBROOKWESTBROOK posted by Alanna Riley on Sunday, December 13, 1998

I am a descendant of Melissa Effaline WESTBROOK, daughter of William Stephen WESTBROOK and Julia Ann Chaddick. Both the Chaddicks and the WESTBROOKS came to Texas from North Carolina via Georgia in the 1830s. The WESTBROOKs arrived in Newton County, Texas in 1835, and the CHADDICKs a bit later. Melissa WESTBROOK married Ivan V. MORGAN, whose father, Duncan MORGAN, had been born in Sampson County, North Carolina, in 1803. Duncan's wife was Elizabeth BELL, of Duplin County, where Duncan's father, James, is shown on the 1790 census. Do you have any information on these families, or know who might? Thanks!

I am researching the JORDAN LEWIS family of BULLOCH CO GA. I have them back to the 1790 census. JORDAN and brother GEORGE were born in DUPLIN CO. NC about 1764. This information I got from the Rev. War Pension files. Due to me living out of state (GEORGIA) I am having some difficulties getting information. I believe the father of JORDAN to be JAMES LEWIS. Do you have any suggestions on how I may obtain any information on this family in DUPLIN CO. NC? MANY THANKS

I am searching for information on G.G.Grandfather. Joseph NOLES or KNOWLES beleived to have been born in Duplin Co. N.C. circa 1811. He may have had an older brother Samuel NOLES also born in N.C. JOSEPH married Cinthia HEAD and had the following children: William ELISHA- b.1836 this is my G.Grandfather. He married Catherine H.B. GUNTER of Ala./ Cinthia-b.1838/ John- b.1842/ Martha S.-b.1844/ James M.-b.1849. I obtained this information from a Cass co. (now Bartow co.) Ga. census of 1850. Indicated on the census was that James was 1 year old and born in N.C. They must have been newcomers to Ga. at the time of the 1850 census. My Grandfather always said that although He was born to NOLES, He changed the name back to the original spelling of KNOWLES. Does anyone know anything about this family? I would like to learn who Joseph NOLES's parents were and where they came from. If anyone can help me, please contact Rena Miller. Thanks Rena
