To His Excellency The Governor of the State of North Carolina
Nov. 2, 1852
The humble petition of William BARNHAM and the undersigned citizens of Duplin County
Sheweth to your excellency: That your pet-the said BARNHAM convicted of the crime of
manslaughter at the last term of the Superior Court of Duplin County is well known to
us the rest of your petition to be a man of ---- deportment and fair reputation for
integrity-but he was convicted by the -------------- coincidence? Of the son of the
deceased a boy of about 9 years of age and your petitioners werily believe that sd.
BARNHAM that the deceased (who was a violent turbulent man) in self defense. That sd.
BARNHHAM was branded in the had & sentenced by the Judge to six months inprisonment
and your petitioners verily believe that, the release of sd. BARNHAM from said
imprisonment will be in strict infirmity with public Justice -Said BARNHAM has been
always a lad of feeble intellect, so as barely to be incurable? To the penalty of the
law for his acts-We therefore pray your excellency as an act of deserved ---------
in office? To remit the remaining term of his imprisonment
