N.C. General Assembly Sessions Records
Nov-Dec 1813
Box 1
Committee of Divorce and Alimony to whom was referred the petition of John
DEVER of Duplin County praying to be divorced from his wife Elizabeth,
report the following facts: the said John DEVER some time in the year 1804
became connected in wedlock with Elizabeth GRAY....that the said Elizabeth
within two or three years after the bonds of matrimony were solemnized,
left the house and protection of the said John..that since the period of
her elopement, she has more than once become a mother and shameful as it to
relate, it appears that these adulterous connections have been confined to
persons of her own colour....that the said Elizabeth for the last two years
has resided under the roof of a Slave, and that she actually claims as her
child and has suckled at her breast an infant bearing the most certain
marks of a coloured Father"
Petition passed in two sessions
In third session....20 Dec 1813....Divorce REJECTED
