Charles Oglvie Petition ~ 1841
Petition for release of Charles OGLVIE-Duplin Co.,-1841
To His Excellency, John M. MOREHEAD, Governor,
We the undersigned petitioners, (Citizens of Duplin County) beg leave to represent
unto your Excellency, that at our late Superior Court of Law; held for the County
aforesaid, Charles OGLEVIE was ordered by the said Court to be imprisioned in the
jail of Sampson County for the term of two months, for having stabbed Absalem
MERRIT, a citizen of this County. We further represent unto your Excellency, that
said MERRIT is a man of exceedingly bad character, and we have not the shadow of a
doubt from the circumstances of the case, (not withstanding it was made appear
different upon trial, by evidence which we believe not entitled to credit) that the
aforesaid Charles OGLEVIE, fought in self defence. We also represent that Charles
OGLEVIE is quite a young man-of good moral character and that for his conduct up to
this time, deserves credit from his fellow citizens. We therefore beg that you will
release him from prison and we will as in duty bound ever pray.
