RACHEL DARDEN SMITH HATCH
Pink Hill—Rachel Darden Smith Hatch, 46, died Thursday afternoon in an
accident that also took the life of her mother-in-law, Lois H. Hatch of Pink
Hill, and her sister-in-law, Bettye H. Whaley of Beulaville. She was
proceeded in death by her parents, John Cameron and Ruby Spence Smith,
and sister, Betty Smith Turner. Mrs. Hatch was a member of the Pink Hill
United Methodist Church, a Sunday School teacher, a member of the choir
and Young Methodist Women. She was a graduate of East Duplin High
School and Campbell University, and had taught school at Garner, Kenansville,
and many years at B. F. Grady Elementary School. Funeral services will be
held at 2 p.m. Sunday from the chapel of Pink Hill Funeral Home with the Rev.
John Andrews officiating. Burial will follow in Oak Ridge Memorial Park.
Survivors include her husband, James “Mike” Hatch, daughter, Melanie Jo Hatch,
and son, James Michael Hatch, Jr., all of the home; sisters, Shelby Jean Smith
of Kinston, and Gracie Smith of Pink Hill; sisters and brothers-in-law, Shirley and
Dovelle Outlaw of Albertson, and Alice and D.I. Scott of Pink Hill, a brother and
sister-in-law, John and Bobbie Smith of Pink Hill. The family will receive friends
from 7-9 p.m. Saturday at Pink Hill Funeral Home, and other times at the home,
241 East N.C. 11, Pink Hill. Memorial gifts may be made to the Pink Hill United
Methodist Church, P.O. Box 25, Pink Hill, NC 28572, or to B. F. Grady
Elementary School, 2591 North NC 11 & 903, Albertson, NC 28508. (Pd. Obit)
