Obituary of Maria Catherine Lanier Mercer ~ 1987

Maria Lanier Mercer, age 79, of Route 2, Beulaville, died early Saturday 
monring in Duplin General Hospital in Kenansville after a lengthy illness.
Funeral services were held Monday at 11:00 a.m. from the Padgett Funeral 
Chapel in Beulaville, conducted by the Rev. Tim Heath. 
Burial followed in Lanier Family cemetery.
She is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Guylie (Minnie) Fountain of 
Richlands, and Mrs. William (Margaret) Simpson of Beulaville; four 
sisters, Lizzie Sandlin and Bertha Brown, both of Reulaville, Letitia 
Marshburn of Richlands, and Evelene Thompson of Pine Level; one brother, 
Leslie Lanier of Beulaville; four grandchildren and three great-
grandchildren.
A native of Duplin County, Mrs. Mercer was the daughter of the late 
Spious and Katie Maready Lanier. She was a member of the Mt. Zion Free 
Will Baptist Church.
Casketbearers were Leslie C. Lanier, Archie Rouse, Jr., Waitus Cowan, 
Lonnie Casteen, Ronal Cowan, and Fred Hunter.
The family received at the funeral home from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. Sunday 
and were at Mrs. Mercer's residence, Route 2, Beulaville, other times.
