LOIS HAWTHORNE HATCH
Pink Hill—Lois Hawthorne Hatch, 74, of 205 West Macon Street, died Thursday
afternoon in an accident that also took the life of her daughter, Bettye H. Whaley
of Beulaville and her daughter-in-law Rachel Smith Hatch of Pink Hill. She was
a member of the Pink Hill United Methodist Church, a member of the United
Methodist Women, a Sunday School teacher, and was for years a substitute
teacher at Pink Hill Elementary School. She was a devoted wife, mother,
grandmother and friend. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday from the
chapel of Pink Hill Funeral Home with the Rev. John Andrews officiating. Burial
will follow in Oak Ridge Memorial Park. Survivors include her husband, Manly
O. Hatch of the home; a daughter and son-in-law, Jane and John Smith, MD of
Clinton; a son and daughter-in-law, Bill and Sara Hatch of Pine Knoll Shores, and
a son, James “Mike” Hatch of Pink Hill; a son-in-law, Danny Lewis Whaley of
Beulaville; her mother, Ethel Hawthorne of Donalds, SC three sisters, Agnes
Lattimer of Donalds, SC, Dora Hewett of Florence, SC, and Mae Bowie of Due
West, SC; two brothers, Carroll Hawthorne of Donalds, SC, and William
Hawthorne of Abbeville, SC; nine grandchildren: Chris, Kim, and Ben Whaley of
Beulaville; Melanie and James Hatch of Pink Hill; and Kelly, Beth, Amanda and
Jackie Smith of Clinton. The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. Saturday
at Pink Hill Funeral Home, and, other times at the home of her son, James
“Mike” Hatch, 241 East NC 11, Pink Hill. Memorial gifts may be made to Pink
Hill United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 25, Pink Hill, NC 28572. (Pd. Obit)
