Obituary of James Garland Cottle ~ 1988

James Garlond Cottle, Sr., age 77, of Route 3, Wallace died Friday night, 
October 7, in the V. A.Medical Center in Fayetteville after a lengthy 
illness.
Funeral services were held Sunday, October 9, at 2:30 p.m. from the 
Padgett Funeral Chapel in Wallace conducted by the Rev. Reuben Mosley. 
Burial followed in Rockfish Memorial Cemetery near Wallace.
He is survived by his wife, Helen Brown Cottle; one daughter, May Ellen 
Cromer of Decatur, Ga.; one son, James Garlond Cottle, Jr. of Tampa Fla.; 
two stepdaughters, Ann Autry of Willard and Flossie Pickett of Chinquapin; 
two stepsons, Danny Lee Surcy of Chinquapin and John David Surcy of 
Wallace; two sisters, Ruby Crain of Greenville, S. C., and Mamie 
Hollowell of St. Louis, Mo.; two brothers, Haywood Cottle and Franklin 
Cottle, both of Wallace; two grandchildren and four stepgrandchildren.
Born in Duplin County, Mr. Cottle was the son of the late Jessie W. and 
Minnie Merritt Cottle. He was retired from the U. S. Navy, having served 
during World War II and later years.
Casketbearers were John David Surcy, Danny Surcy, Rodney Springer, 
Clarence Rivenbark, Jimmy Albertson, and D. J. Whaley, Jr.
The family received at the funeral home from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. Saturday 
and were at their residence, Route 3, Wallace, other times.
