Funeral Rites Today For Accident Victim 

Funeral services for James Lawrence Cavanaugh, 44, of 2012 Hoover Street, 
will be conducted at 4 p.m. today at Urban Street Baptist Church by the 
Revs. Elmo Renegar and the Rev. Hobert McFall.
Burial will be in Oaklawn Memorial Gardens.
Mr. Cavanaugh was killed about 8 a.m. yesterday when the heavy pay-loader 
machine he was driving apparently went out of control, left the highway 
and plunged down an embankment on N. C. Highway 109. He was pinned 
underneath. The accident occurred about one mile outside the city limits.
State Highway Patrolman J. L. Fisher said a witness told him the loader 
appeared to go out of control, veer from one side of the road to the other 
and then roll down the 10-foot embankment.
Cavanaugh had a puncture wound in his lower abdomen. Coroner V. M. Long 
said death was caused by a severe internal hemorrhage.
Mr. Cavanaugh had been employed by Winston-Salem for nine years.
The body will be at the home until 3 p.m. today. It will be placed in the 
church 30 minutes before the service.
Pallbearers will be R. D. Carter, Bobby Carter, Donald Carter, Bill 
Crotts, Bill Watson and Hewell Snyder.
Mr. Cavanaugh was born Jan. 28, 1914, in Jones County, a son of Lonnie 
Haywood and Penny Carter Cavanaugh. He came to Winston-Salem at an early 
age. He was formerly employed by the P. H. Hanes Knitting Co. in the 
spinning and card room.
He was a member of Urban Street Baptist Church and the Men's Bible Class.
He married Miss Helen Carter Feb. 13, 1939.
Surviving are the wife; a son, Jimmy Cavanaugh, a daughter, Barbara Carter,
a brother, David Cavanaugh of Winston-Salem, and three sisters, Mrs. 
Myrtle Cranfill of Winston-Salem, Miss Lila Cavanaugh of Virginia and Miss 
Carrie Cavanaugh of Lexington.
