Cyrus T. Fussell Suffers Heart Attack While On Hunting Trip
Cyrus T. Fussell, a 66-year-old retired Rose Hill farmer, subject of an
extensive search Friday night after he failed to return home before dark
from a coon hunting trip, was found dead early Saturday morning in a
wooded area west of Rose Hill. His death was ruled as the result of a
heart attack.
Mr. Fussell was last seen Friday morning around 11:00 o'clock as he started
out with his two dogs on a coon hunt. The search was begun when he failed
to return home at dark.
Rose Hill firemen were joined by the members of the Wallace Volunteer Fire
Department, members of the Duplin County Sheriff's Department, other
county lawmen and Rose Hill and Wallace citizens who banded together to
comb a large wooded tract of land for the missing hunter, making up a
party numbering approximately 200-300 persons. An appeal was made at the
Wallace-Rose Hill - Jones Central basketball game played at the Rose Hill
gym Friday night for volunteers who would assist in the search.
Mr. Fussell's body was finally located shortly after midnight (around 12:45
a.m.) about 1 and 1/2 miles from his automobile in a bay west of Rose Hill
between the Town of Rose Hill and Nash Johnson's farm. He was lying
between two logs, with his head resting on one of them, having apparently
fallen there when he suffered the attack.
During the search, Francis Johnson of Wallace volunteered to fly his plane
over the area in an effort to locate any fires which Mr. Fussell might
have put out had he been lost.
Funeral services were conducted at the Rose Hill Methodist Church at 3
p.m. Sunday with the Rev. D. A. Petty officiating. Burial was in the
family cemetery near Rose Hill.
Survivors include his wife, the former Myra Cavenaugh; two sons, C. T.
Jr., of Rose Hill, and Aaron E., of Raleigh; one daughter, Mrs. Max Sykes,
of Wallace; seven grandchildren; two brothers, Bascom and Acey, both of
Rose Hill; three sisters, Mrs. J. C. Scott of Rowland, Mrs. Albert Ward of
Goldsboro, and Mrs. Oscar Turner of Rose Hill.
