Becky Price's Story
Research as of today indicates that Rebecca “Becky” Price was born about 1810
to Hamity Price (1771-1819) and Hannah _____ (1780-after 1834) in Sampson
County, NC.
On October 8, 1824, Becky Price gave birth to a son, Stephen Henry Price, when
she was an impressionable young girl of about 14 years. The father of her child is
unknown. Family stories handed down say the reason Becky couldn’t marry the
father was that he was already married. On February 10, 1828, when her son was
4 years old and she was 18, Becky Price married Bryant Parker. Three weeks
before her wedding, Rebecca Price made a deed of gift to her toddler son. This 20
January 1828 deed was witnessed by her brother-in-law Daniel Jones and was
executed before Rebecca's marriage possibly to reserve her Price property for her
son Stephen Henry Price before she married.
We know almost nothing about the man who was probably Becky’s father. Hamity
Price shows up in the 1810 census for Sampson County, NC, with no children, and
in an 1834 deed, his widow, Hannah Price, and her children, Elizabeth Price Jones,
Rebecca Price Parker, Caleb Price, Absolem Price, William Price, Edney Price
Walker, and Abigail Price Southerland, sued to recover land as heirs of Hamaty Price.
Becky Price and Bryant Parker had 9 children between 1829 and 1845. Becky Price
Parker died about 1873 and is buried in Holly Hills Church, Duplin Co, NC.
