William & Sarah Hunter to Stephen Brown 100 acres
This indenture made the 2nd day of February in the 22nd year of American Independence & in the
year of our Lord Christ 1798 between William Hunter & Sarah his wife of the State of North
Carolina & County of Duplin of the one part & Stephen Brown of the same place of the other
part. Witnesseth that the said William Hunter & Sarah his wife for divers good causes &
considerations them there unto moving but more especially for the valuable consideration of
the sum of one hundred pounds current money to them in hand paid before the ensealing &
delivery of these presents the receipt whereof is hereby acknowledged hath by these presents
granted bargained sold assigned & set over to the said Stephen Brown his heirs & assigns
forever a certain tract or parcel of land situate lying & being in Duplin County aforesaid
on the North side of the Grove Swamp to lower side of Ashe branch beginning at a bunch of
Ash Saplings growing out of an old stump on a run of the Gum Swamp (& along side of Ash Branch)
the old line about W3 W190 poles to the corner a pine …… thence the oldline about N8 E 8 poles
to a blackjack thence N56 poles to a white oak & water oak thence 70 poles to a blackjack
thence S45 W 6 poles to a stake in the S. edge of a branch called Alexander thence down the
said branch as it meanders to the mouth thence down Ash branch as it meandrs with Phillip’s
line to the mouth thence as the run of the Grove the first station and runing in the whole 100
acres be the same more or less to have & to hold the said land & premises with the appurtenances
to the same belonging or in any wise appertaining to him the Stephen Brown or heirs & assigns
forever & the said William Hunter & Sarah his wife the aforesaid land & premises with the
appurtenances & advantages thereof belonging or in any wise appertaining to him the said Stephen
Brown his heirs & assigns shall & will warrant forever defend from & against them their heirs
as also from &against the just & lawful claim & demand of all persons whatsoever who may
hereafter lay any lawful claim to the same. In witness whereof the said William Hunter & Sarah
his wife have hereunto set their hands & seals the date above written.
