(Transcribed by Joan S Dunn) Deed Book 1 A Page 20 & 21 William Houston To William Hubbard Deed of 325 acres of lands This indenture made this 13th day of May in the eighth year of American Independance and in the year of our Lord Christ one thousand seven hundred and eighty four between William Houston Esqr. of the State of North Carolina and County of Duplin of the one part, witnesseth that the said William Houston Esqr. for divers good causes and considerations him thereunto moving but more expecially for the valuable consideration of the sum of one dollar to him in hand well and truly paid by William Hubbard aforesaid before the insealing and delivery of these presents the receipt whereof he doth hereby acknowledge to the there with fully contented and paid, hath by these presents given granted bargained sold assigned and set over the the said William Hubbard his heirs and assigns forever, one certain tract of parcel of land situate lying and being in Duplin County aforesaid on the east side of the North East River and being a part of a tract of land of eight hundred and forty acres which was granted to Henry McCulloh bearing date the third day of March 1745, and thence it was granted to William Houston Esqr. by an act of General Assembly in May 1780, reference being had may more fully appear. Beginning at a gum on the East Branch of the River Cape Fear, and runs thence East fifty one chains to a pine by the Engine branch, then South twenty degrees West eighty seven chains to a lightwood, thence forty six degrees West two hundred and sixty eight poles to an ash and maple on the River, thence up the various courses of the River to the beginning, containing in the whole three hundred and twenty five acres, be the same more or less, to have and to hold the aforesaid land and premises with all the appurtenances to the same belonging or in any wise appertaining of every nature on kind whatsoever to him the said William Hubbard his heirs & assigns forever, free from all former gifts grants mortgages intails dower or titles of dowers or any incumbrances whatsoever given granted or done by him the said William Houston Esqr. or any person whatsoever by power or under him and the said William Houston Esqr. the aforesaid land & premises shall and will warrant and defend to him the said William Hubbard his heirs and assigns forever against him the said William Houston Esqr. his heirs and assigns to the said William Hubbard the aforesaid land and premises shall and may have hold use occupy enjoy and possess as his own free and lawful inheritance free from all incumbrances wharsoever, only what wood and timber the said William Houston Esqr. and wife their natural lives times may think proves to use for their plantation and the taxes as they hereafter may become due only are excepted. In witness whereof the said William Houston Exqr. have hereunto set his hand and seal the date above written. N. B. The wood up the various courses of the river betwixts the 10th & 11th lines before signing and delivery William Houston, Sen. Signed sealed and delivered in the presence of us W. Dickson Saml.
