William Houston To Griffith Houston
Deed 256 acres of lands
This indenture made the thirteenth day of May in the eighth year of American Independance
and in the year of our Lord Christ one thousand seven hundred and eighty four between William
Houston Esqr. of the State of North Carolina and County of Duplin of the one part, witnesseth
that the said William Houston Esqr. for divers good causes and considerations him thereunto
moving but more expecially for the valuable consideration of the sum of one dollar to him in
hand well and truly paid by Griffith Houston aforesaid before the insealing and delivery of
these presents the receipt whereof he doth hereby acknowledge to the there with fully contented
and paid, hath by these presents given granted bargained sold assigned and set over the the said
Griffith Houston his heirs and assigns forever, one certain tract or parcel of land situate
lying and being in Duplin County aforesaid on the east side of the North East River of Cape
Fear and being a part of a tract of land of eight hundred and forty acres which was granted to
Henry McCulloh Esqr. bearing date the third day of March 1745, and thence it was granted to
William Houston Esqr. by an act of General Assembly in May 1780, reference being had may more
fully appear. Beginning at a maple and ash on the branch of Cape Fear River, Wm. Hubbard lower
corner, and runs with his line South forty six degrees East two hundred sixty poles to a light
wood stake, then South seventy degrees East twelve poles to a stake, then South twenty West one
hundred and forty poles to a stake thence North forty six degrees West three hundred and forty
poles to a stke on the River, thence up the various courses of the River to the station, in the
whole two hundred and fifty six acres be the same more or less to have and to hold the aforesaid
premises with all the appurtenances to the same belonging or in any wise appertaining of every
nature or kind whatsoever to him the said Griffith Houston his heirs and assigns forever free
from all former gifts, grants, mortgages, intails, dowers rights or titles of dowers or any
incumbrances wharsoever given granted or done by him the said William Houston Esqr. the afore
said land & premises shall and will warrant and defend to him the said Griffith Houston his
heirs and assigns forever against him the said William Houston Esqr. his heirs and assigns to
the said Griffith Houston the aforesaid land and premises shall and may have hold use occupy
enjoy and possess as his own free and lawful inheritance free and clear from all incumbrances
whatsoever (only what wood the said William Houston Esqr. and wife and natural lives, times may
think proper to use for their plantation) and the taxes as they henceafter may become are only
excepted. In witness whereof the said William Houston Esqr. hereunto set his hand and seal the
date above written.
