(Transcribed by Diane Siniard) Deed Book 1 A Page 491, 492, & 493 William Newton To William Wilkinson Deed for 2 pieces of land This indenture made the fourteenth day of January in the year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred & eighty eight, Between William Newton of the County of Duplin in the State of No. Carolina of the one part and William Wilkinson of the same place of the other part Witnesseth, that the said William Newton for and in consideration of the sum of two hundred and fifty pounds current money of the State of No. Carolina to him in hand well and truly paid before the sealing and delivery of these presents by the said William Wilkinson the receipt whereof he doth hereby acknowledge & himself therewith to be fully satisfied contented & paid & of every part thereof doth acquit and discharge the said William Wilkinson his executors & administrators forever by these presents, he the said Wm. Newton hath granted bargained, sold aliened conveyed confirmed assigned & set over, & by these presents doth grant bargain sell alien convey confirm assigns & set over unto the said William Wilkinson & his heirs a certain piece or parcel of land situate lying & being in the County of Duplin & State of North Carolina aforesaid, on the south side of Bear swamp & on the lower side of Meeting Branch. Begining at a sweet gum and poplar at and in the branch, thenc by estimation of courses & distances runing 74 Et. to the meeting branch, thence along the same course 24 pole to a pine, thence North 22 Wt. 80 pole to a black oak, thence No. 67 Wt. to a black oak near the head of Thunder Bottom, thence No. 65 West the various courses of the said Thunder Botton George Hornes's line, the various courses thereof to a black gum at the edge of the run of Bear Swamp, thence up the run of Bear Swamp to the run of Meeting Branch thence up the run of Bear Swamp to the run of Meetin Branch thence up the run of said Branch to the mouth of gum branch & from thence up the said gum branch to the first station, & containing in the whole by estimation one hundred acres by the same more or less, it being part of a tract of 360 acres which was sold and conveyed by Henry Eustace McCulloch Esqe. to Frederick Bell &c. reference being thereunto had may more fully appear, & since sold and conveyed by the said Frederick Bell to Charles Hines & by the said Charles Hines to the said William Newton & by the said William Newton to now by these presents sold and conveyed to the said William Wilkinson in manner and form aforesaid and also one other tract or parcel of land lying & being in Duplin County aforesaid on the south side Bear swamp & on the head of the Meeting Branch & Gum Branch, adjoining the aforesaid one hundred acres of land. Begining at a state & small pine George Hornes's corner, thence So. 64 Et. 144 poles to a stake, thence So. 232 pole to a pine in a Savannah, thence Wt. 360 pole to a large pine, thence No. 166 pole to a black jack Rawley Mills's corner, thnce as his line So. 70 Et. 120 pole to a stake among three black jacks & a pine, thence as his other line No. 30 Et. 65 pole to a black jack at Hardy Malpass'es corner, thence to and with said Newton;s own line No. 72 Et. 114 poles to a pine his corner, thence along his other line No. 25 Wt. 90 poles, thence along George Hornes's line to the begining & containing in the four hundred & forty acres, it being the contents of a patent granted to the said William Newton, bearing date fifteenth day of December 1778, reference as being thereunto had may more fully appear and all houses buildings ways waters water courses profits commodities hereditaments & appurtenances whatsoever to the said premises hereby granted or any part thereof belonging or in any wise appertaining & the reversion & reversions remainder and remainders rent issues and profits thereof, and also all the estate right title interest use trust property claim & demand whatsoever of him the said William Newton of in and to the said premises, & all deeds evidences & writings touching or in any wise concerning the same. To have and to hold the lands hereby conveyed & all & singular other the premises hereby bargained & sold & every part and parcel thereof with their and every of their appurtenances unto the said William Wilkinson his heirs and assigns forever, to the only proper use and behoofe of him the said William Wilkinson & of his heirs & assigns forever, & the said William Newton for himself his heirs executors and administrators doth covenant promise and grant to and with the said William Wilkinson his heirs & assigns by these presents, that the said William Newton now at the time of sealing & delivering these presents is seized of a good sure and perfect estate of inheritance in fee simple of in and to the premises hereby bargained & sold and that he has good power and lawfull authority to grant & convey the same to the said William Wilkinson in manner & form aforesaid & that the said premises now on and so forever hereafter shall remain & be free and clear off & from all former gifts grants bargains sales dowers right & title of dower judgments executions titles troubles charges & from all manner of incumbrances whatsoever, & further he the said William Newton deoth hereby engage for himself his heirs executors & administrators, to warrant secure & forever defend the said William Wilkinson in the quiet & peaceble possession of the said lands & premises from & against the just & lawfull claim & demand of him the said William Newton & of all and every other person or persons whatsoever claiming the same or any part or parcel thereof. In witness whereof the said William Newton hath hereunto set his hand & seal the day & date first above written. William Newton Signed sealed & delivered in the presence of William Wilkinson senr Robert Wilkinson State of No. Carolina Duplin County January Term 1788.
