William & Esther Routledge To Edward Pearsall
Deed for 251 acres lands
This indenture made the eleventh day of June in the ninth year of the American
Independence and in the year of our Lord Christ one thousand seven hundred and eighty
five, between William Routledge and Esther his wife of the State of North Carolina and
County of New Hanover of the one part and Edward Pearsall of the State aforesaid and
County of Duplin of the other part, Witnesseth that the said William Routledge and
Esther his wife for divers good causes and considerations them thereunto moving, but
more especially for the valluable consideration of the sum of two hundred and twenty
five pounds specie to them in hand well and truly paid or secured to be paid by Edward
Pearsall aforesaid before the ensealing of these presents the rects. whereoff is hereby
acknowledged hath by these presents given granted bargained & sold to the said Edward
Pearsall his heirs and assigns forever, all that tract or parcel of land situate lying
and being in Duplin COunty aforesaid on the north side of Grove swamp, including part
of three survey's Viz. part of a survey of John Miller's jun. and part of a survey or
deed of one hundred acres sold by Henry Eustace McCulloch to Edward Matcher, as also
part of a paten of one hundred & forty acres granted to the said William Routledge,
which said three pieces of lamd are bound as follows, and are included in the following
lins Viz. Begining at a maple on the north side of the grove swamp, below the gridge
which is called McCulloch's maple corner, and runs thence north 40 Wt. 220 poles to a
pine, thence North 30 Wt. 100 poles to a pine sapling, thence No. 40 Et. 200 poles to a
red oak, thence So. 30 Et. 80 pole to the main road thence along the main road with Smith's
line to the run of the Mill branch, by the mill dam being a course of SO. 35 WT. thence
down the run of the mill branch as it meanders with Smith's line to the mouth, thence up
the run of the grove swamp as it meanders to the first station, containing in the whole
by estimation two hundred and fifty one acres be the same more or less, being part as
aforesaid of different survey's or deeds Viz. part of a deed from John Matchet to the
said William Routledge for one hundred acres, dated the eighth of Sept. 1767, also part
of a deed from John Miller junr. for one hundred acres to the said William Routledge
dated the 23rd of August 1768, and part of a patent granted to the said William Routledge
for one hundred and forty acres, dated the fourth of May 1769, to have & to hold the
aforesaid land and premises with all the appurtenances to the same belonging or in any
wise appurtaining to him the said Edward Pearsall his heirs and assigns forever free from
all incumbrances whatever, given granted or done by them the said William Routledge and
Esther his wife & the said William Routledge and Esther his wife the aforesaid land and
premises to him the said Edward Pearsall his heirs and assigns, shall and will warrant
and forever defend from and against, the said William Routledge & Esther his wife as also
from and against the just and lawful claim of all and every other person or persons whatever,
who may hereafter lay any lawfull claim to the same, and the said Edward Pearsall the
aforesaid land and premises shall and may have hold use occupy enjoy and possess as his
own free and lawfull inheritance, free from all incumbrance whatever, the taxes as the are
or may hereafter become due, only excepted and fore prized. In witness, whereof the said
William Routledge and Esther Routledge his wife have hereunto set their hands and seals the
date above written.

There was the within deed proved in open Court by the oath of James Pearsall & ordered
to be registered.

Esther Routledge being privately examined by me whether signed the within deed of her own
free will and voluntary consent, declared that she was not compelled or forced by any means
whatever to sign the said deed, but that she did it of her own free will without any
computtion whatever.
