(Transcribed by Joan S Dunn) Deed Book 12 Page 159, 160, & 161 Stephen Miller to Joseph McGowen Deed 460 acres Know all men by these that I Stephen Miller of the County of Duplin in consideration of the sum of three Thousand dollars to me paid by Joseph McGowen of the County aforesaid the receipt whereof I do hereby acknowledge do by these presents give grant bargain sell & convey unto the said Joseph McGowen his heirs & assings the following tracts of land situate in the County aforesaid bounded and described as follows (viz) one tract or parcil of Land which was purchaised of Charles Ward and Perscilla Ward his wife one piece begining at a chinquapin state & water oak on the side of Goshen Swamp on Thmas Grimes's line runs thence so 30 wt 170 poles with the old line to a pine the old corner thence No 75 wt 100 poles to a stake in maple swamp thence down the swamp No 30 Et 170 poles to a maple in the same swamp thence to the begining containing one hundred acres more or less also one other piece begining at a pine the second corner of the above hundred acres runs thence so 30 wt 160 with the old line to a pine near Whitmans plantation thence No 75 wt 100 poles with the old line to a pine on maple swamp then down maple No 30 Et 160 poles to a stake in maple swamp then to the begining containing one hundred acres more or Less Both of the above tracts being part of a survey patented by William McRee in the year 1741 also one other piece Begining at a water oak & sweet gum on the run of maple swamp about 1/2 mile below the main road runs thence with McCullocks line No 39 wt 104 poles to a pine by Edmond Marchets old line then No 51 Et 164 poles to a pine Joseph Grimes's corner then with his line Et 60 poles to a Stake in maple Swamp then up maple with the line of the aforesaid mentioned tracts or parcils of land to the Begining be the same more or Less it being the contents of a patent granted to Benjamin Folson in the year 1768 containing ninety acres be the same more or Less the three aforesaid mentioned tracts or parcils of land being measured & re surveyed to the said Stephen Miller also twenty acres of land which was patented by Stephen Miller in the year 1805 which said twenty acres is bounded and situated as follows on and in maple joining his own and watermans lines begining at a water oak on the Run of said Swamp his own corner and runs along his own line No 39 wt 114 poles to a pine his other corner thence so 119 wt 23 poles to a black jack watermans corner thence along his line so 37 Et 136 poles crossig said Run to a stake on his said Millers line thence along his line to the begining which said tract and parcils of land were allotted and set off to me by commissioners appointed to divide the real Estate of Stephen Miller decd by refference to which it will more fully appear also one other tract of land which I purchaised of Thomas Molton in the year 1826 which said tract of land is situated & bounded as follows (viz) on and in the south side of Goshen Swamp and on and in the west side of maple Swamp it being part of a Survey Patented by Joseph Grimes Sr begining at a water oak ash and maple in the Run of maple Swamp on a line of a Survey of two hundred & fifty acres patented by Joseph Grines Running thence west 85 poles to a blackjack thence No 40 poles to a blackjack thence No 45 Et 155 pole to a cypress & black gum on the run of Goshen Swamp thence down the various courses of the Run about 80 pole to the first run of maple swamp thence up the run of maple as it meanders to the begining containing seventy six acres be the same more or Less which several pieces and several tract of land I warrant & defend to the said Joseph McGowen his heirs and assigns forever In witness whereof I have here unto set my hand & seal this the 9th day of December 1839 S Miller In presence of O R Kenan H Sullivan State of North Carolina Duplin County Court of please & Quarter Sessions January term 1840 The Execution of the within deed is duly acknowledged in open Court by Stephen Miller and is ordered to be registered Copy N Routledge Rgr Test James Dickson Clk
