Stephen M Houston to James Williams 

Bill of sale for Lucy Jacob & Rhody

State of North Carolina County of Duplin

Know all men by these presents that I Stephen M Houston of the County of Duplin aforesaid 
for and in consideration of the sum of Eleven hundred & fifty dollars to me in hand paid 
by James Williams of the said County of Duplin at and before the sealing & delivery of 
these presents the receipt of which I do hereby acknowledge & I am there with fully 
satisfied content and paid have given granted bargained sold and confirmed & by these 
presents do give grant bargain sell & confirm unto the said James Williams the following 
Negro Slaves viz a girl called Lucy aged about eleven years a negro boy called Jacob about 
nine years of age and a Negro girl called Rhody about four year of age to have & to hold 
the said Negro Slaves Lucy Jacob & Rhody unto the said James William his heirs Executors 
administrators & assigns forever to his & their only proper use & behoof forever and I the 
said Stephen M Houston for myself my Heirs Executors administrators and assigns do hereby 
covenant with the said James Williams his Executors administrators & assigns that I shall & 
will warrant secure & forever defend the said Negro Slaves Lucy Jacob & Rhody unto the said 
James Williams his Administrators executors & assigns against the claims & demands of all 
persons whatsoever In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand & affixed my seal this 
twenty third day of may in the year of our Lord one Thousand Eight hundred & thirty nine 
signed sealed & delivered in presence of

The Execution of the within bill of sale is duly proved in open Court by the oath of Harper 
Williams the subscribing witness thereto & is ordered to be registered
