(Transcribed by Joan S Dunn) Deed Book 12 Page 115, & 116 Stephen Herring To William Chesnut Deed 140 acres lands This Indenture made this 18th day of July in the year of our Lord One Thousand Eight Hundred & thirty nine between Stephen Herring of the County of Duplin and State of North Carolina of the one part and William Chesnut of the same County & State of the other part witnesseth that I Stephen Herring do sell grant let & deliver over to William Chesnut a certain parcil or tract of land lying & being in the County and State above named on the East side of Elder Swamp it being a portion of the land of Jonathan D Stanford decd lot No 6 Begining at a black gum in the mill Branch thence south 55 Et 350 pole to a stake thence No 45 Et 66 pole to a stake thence No 55 west 400 poles to a white oak on the run of the mill Branch thence down the run to the Begining containing by survey one hundred & forty acres be the same more or less I Stephen Herring do for myself warrant & forever defend the right & title of the above described parcil of Land unto Wm Chesnut his heirs &c for the valuable consideration of Two hundred & fifty Dollars in hand paid or otherwise secured before the signing sealing and delivering of these presents this day & date above written signed and delivered in the presents off Stephen Herring A. T. Stanford Keday Bryan State of North Carolina Duplin County Court of please & Quarter Sessions October term 1839 The Execution of the within deed is duly proved in open Court by the oath of Alisander T.
