Samuel Tanner To William Whitfield
Deed for 100 acres lands
To all to whome these presents shall come greetin, Know ye that I Samuel Tanner of
Duplin County in the State of North Carolina, for and in consideration of the sum of thirty
pounds current money of North Carolina to me in hand paid before the ensealing hereof, well
and truly by William Whitfield of Wayne County and State aforesaid, the receipt whereof I do
hereby acknowledge myself therewith fully satisfied and contented thereof and every part and
parcel thereof do exonerate and discharge the said William Whitfield his heirs executors
administrators forever and by these presents do freely fully and absolutely give grant bargain
sell alein convey and confirm unto him the said William Whitfield his heirs and assigns forever,
one message tract or parcel of land lying in Duplin County on the east side of the North East
Branch of Cape Fear, being part of a paten granted to Jesse Barefield for two hundred acres of
land bearing date the 22nd day of December 1770. Begining at a pine the second corner of the
said paten near to a foard across Rooty Branch a little above William Daniel's plantation, and
runing along the paten line So. 40 Wt. and with the courses of the paten joining Theophilus
William's land to Kornegay's line, then with Kornegay's lines to Smith's Branch then up Smith's
Branch and Rooty Branch to the begining, being the land & plantation whereon the aforesaid
Samuel Tanner now lives, containing by estimation one hundred acres more or less. To have and
to hold the aforesaid bargained prmises with all the appurtenances and commodities to the same
belonging or in any wise appertaining, to him the said William Whitfield his heirs and assigns
forever, to his and their only proper use benefit, and behoofe forever, and I the said Samuel
Tanner for me my heirs executors administrators do covenant promise and grant to and with the
said William Whitfield his heirs & assigns that before the ensealing hereof I am the true &
lawfull owner of the above bargained premises, and am lawfully siezed and possessed of the same
in my own porper right by virtue of a deed from William Daniel bearing date the third day of
February 1785, as a good perfect and absolute estate of inheritance in fee simple, and have in
myself good right full power & lawfull authourity to grant bargain sell convey & confirm the
said bargained prmises in manner as above said, and that the said William Whitfield his heirs
and assigns shall and may from time to time and at all times forever hereafter, by force &
virtue of these presents lawfully peacebly and quietly have hold use occupy possess and enjoy
the said demised and bargained premises with all the appertenances free & clear freely & clearly
acquitted exonerate & discharge of form all & all manner or former or other gifts grants
bargains sales leases wills mortgages entails jointures judgements executions incumbrances &
extents further more I the said Samuel Tanner for myself my heirs executors do covenant and
engage the above demised premises to him the said William Whitfield his heirs executors adms.
& assigns, against the lawfull clame or demand of any persons whatsoever, forever hereafter
will warrent secure and forever defend. In witness whereof I have hereto set my hand and fixed
seal this sixth day of October 1785.
