(Transcribed by Joan S Dunn) Deed Book 1 A Page 110 & 111 Samuel Sowell To John Barnet Deed fir 100 acres lands This indenture made the fifteenth day of January & in the year of our Lord Christ one thousand seven hundred & eighty five between Samuel Sowell of the State of No. Carolina & County of Duplin of the one part planter and John Barnet of the same County and State of the aforesaid planter of the other part, witnesseth that I the said Samuel Sowell do for and in consideration of the sum of forty poynds currency in hand paid before the insealing and delivering hereof, hath given granted bargained & sold and by these presents doth give grant bargain sell aline & confirm unto him the said John Barnet his heirs & assigns forever one tract or parcel of land containing one hundred acres be the same more or less lying and being in the County & State aforesaid on the east side of the No. East, between the great & Matthews branch including the improvements there the widow Bowing formerly lived. Begining at a red oak and runs north 100 poles to a Lightwood stump thence Et. 160 poles to a stake in a meadow, thence So. 100 pole to a black jack thence to the begining, the said land patend by Elijah Bowen, and made over by deed from Bowen to said Sowell & from Soerll to Barnette (the said John Barnet) to hold the above bargained land and premises with all and singular every part & percel thereof with all priviledged & appertenances to the same belonging or in any wise appertaining to him the said John Barnet his heirs and siigns forever to his or their only proper use benefit & behoof and the said Samuel Sowell do for myself my heirs covenant promise and agree with the said John Barnet his heirs & assigns that before the ensealing of the presents I an the true sole & lawfull owner of the same and have good right and lawfull authority to sale and convey the same, and the said Sowell do for my self my heirs executors administrators warrent and forever defend the above bargained land and premises unto the said John Barnet his heirs executors administrators of assigns against the lawful claim or clames of any person or person wharwoever, and that the said John Barnet his heirs executors administrators or assigns may from time to time & at all times herafoter have hold use occupy & enjoy each & singular every part & parcer therof without any interuption of him the said Samuel Sowell his heirs executors administrators or any other assign whatwoever, and I do further engage to make the same free & clear of all manner of incumbrances of any kind, and do further ablige myself to give another deed if this shall not be deemed lawful. In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand & fixed my seal the day and date above written. Samuel Sowell Signed sealed & delivered in presence of us George Smith Shadrick Sowell State of North Carolina Duplin County January Court 1785.
