Deed
This Indenture made this Twenty fourth day of March in the year of our Lord Eighteen hundred
& thirty eight between Robert Sykes of the County of Sumter and State of Alabama of the one
part & Buckner Hodges Eliza Hodges Civil Hodges Clarissa Hodges Phirrus Hodges and John H.
Hodges of the second part all of the County of Sumter And State of Alabama witnesseth that
the said party of the first part for and in consideration of Love and Natural affection and
the sum of one dollar to him in hand Paid by the said parties of the second part the Receipt
whereof is hereby acknowledged hath this day Bargained and sold given and granted and by them
presents doth bargain & sell give grant convey & confirm unto the said parties of the second
part their Heirs and assigns forever the following described land and negroes (to wit) A
certain tract or parcil of Land lying & being in the County of Sumter and State of Alabama
and in the district of Lands subject to sell at Demopolis designated as the East half of the
south west quarter of section No ten in Dorris Town Ship No Nineteen of Rangr No three West
containing Eighty acres more or Less also the west half of the south west quarter of Sutran No
ten in Township No nineteen of Rangr No three West containing Eighty acres more or Less Also
the North West Quarter of Section then of Township nineteen of Rangr three West containing one
hundred & sixty acres more or less Also the following Negroes to wit Isaac & Alcy Slaves for
life and the property of the said party of the first part Which tracts of Land with the
Hereditaments and Appurtenances then unto belonging and the said Negros the said part of the
first part for himself did his Heirs unto the said parties of the second part and their Heirs
and assigns will warrant & forever defend against the Lawfull claim of all persons whatsoever
or indefeasible inheritance in fee simple given under my hand and seal the day & year above
written

Personally Appeared Robert Sikes before me Price Williams Clerk of the County Court of said
County and acknowledged that he signed sealed & delivered the forgoing instrument on the day
of its date & for the purposes therein contained witness whereof I hereunto set my hand this
2nd day of April 1838

by virtue of the annual commission to us directed personally came befor us this 27th day of
February 1839 in the Town of Levingston County of Sumter and State of Alabama at the office
of Jerge & Smith at 11 oclock A.M. James Hair Jacob Smith & Samuel Redus who being first duly
Sworn upon the holy Evangilist of Almighty God deposit & say that they saw Robert Sikes Execute
seal and deliver the forgoing deed for the purposes therein mentioned Given under our hands &
seals at Levingston this 27th day of February 1839

Know ye that we in consuquence of your prudence and fidellity have appointed you or any Two of
you to take the acknowledgement or probate of a Bill of Sale made by Wilson Hodges to Hollowell
Hodges in the County of Sumter Alabama on the 18th day of June 1838 tested by Robert Sikes and
Thomas J George time and place as you shall think fit to take upon the Holy Evangilist of
Almighty God the testimony of subscribing witnessess touching and concerning what they may know
in and about the making of said Bill of Sale and concerning what the way that you make a
certificate of their probate in writing and return the same closed up under your hand and seal
to our said Court to be held for the County aforesaid at the Court House in Kenansville on the
third monday of April Next to gether with this writ or commisssion witness James Dickson Clerk
of the said Court at office the third monday of January in the 63rd year of our independence

Know ye that we in confidence of your prudence and fidellity have appointed you and by them
presents do give unto you full power and Authourity in pursuance of an order of our Court of
Please and Quarter Sessions for the County of Duplin aforesaid or any two of you to take the
acknowledgment or probate of A deed of Gift made by Hollowell Hodges to the Heirs of Wilson
Hodges on the 19th day of June 1838 and tested by Robert Sikes & Sveendemood and also a deed
made by Robert Sikes to the Heirs of Wilson Hodges March 24th 1838 in Sumter County Alabama
and tested by James Hair Jacob Smith& Samuel Reddus at each time and place as you shall think
fit to take upon hte Holy Evangilists of Almighty God the Statement of subscirbing witness
touching and concerning what they may know in and about the making of said deed and that you
make a certificate of Probate and return the same closed up under your hand and seal to our
said Court to be held for the County aforesaid at the Court House in Kenansville on the third
monday of April Next together with this writ witness James Dickson clerk of the said Court at
office the third monday of January in the 63 year of our Independence AD 1839
