West Deed 138 acres of Land recorded Oct term 1840 This Indenture made this 6th day of May In the year of our Lord one Thousand Eight hundred and forty between Peter Carlton of the State of North Carolina and County of Duplin of the one part and John Rackley West Son of Daniel West and Brother to the Wife of said Peter Carlton of the same State and County of Sampson of the other part witnesseth that the said Peter Carlton as well for and in consideration of the Natural Love and affection which he hath and beareth unto the said John R West his Brother in Law as also for the better maintainance and Preferment of the said John R West hath given granted aliened enfeoffed conveyed and confirmed and by these presents doth give grant aliene enfeoff convey & confirm unto the said John R West his heirs and assigns forever Two certain tracts or parcels of land Situate lying & being in the County of Duplin aforesaid and on the south side of Cow Marsh the one Beginning at an Ash and Gum at the run of said Marsh near the old Poly Bridge about one pole above the Bridge thence nearly a South East course on the west side of that fence line agreed on Between Isack Gore and his Brother John Gore a dividing line between them 105 poles to a Stake thence nearly an East Course 57 poles to a fence on the Chain Road thence along said road to a line of the Brick House survey thence with said line supposed to be about a north East course to the corner a lightwood Stake in a little meadow and supposed on the same course continued to a corner in James Branch at a Small Spruce Pine thence up the said Branch as it meanders to a Water Oak thence a straight line Supposed to be a North west course to the mouth of Spring Branch where it empties into Cow Marsh thence with the meander of said Cow Marsh to the first Station containing by estimation one hundred acres the other ajoining the above or first tract and beginning at a Gum in the mouth of Spring Branch and at the run of Cow Marsh and thence supposed to be an East course to a water oak in James Branch a dividing line formerly Between Jonathan Gore and his Brother Isaac Gore thence up the meanders of said Branch 8 Poles to a water oak thence turning west to a Hickory Sprout or Stake in the edge of the old cleared land it being 20 poles from the old dividing line on the North East Side thence supposed to be North East course 18 poles to a Stake in the old cleared ground thence supposed to be a North West course along the fence 55 poles to a Small Black Gum at the Edge of the Marsh thence down the Edge of said Marsh to the Beginning containing thirty acres be the same more or less to have & to hold the aforesaid land and premises hereby given and granted together with all and Singular the improvements advantages emoluments and appertinance by therewith belonging or in any wise appertaining unto the said John R. West his assigns assigns to the only proper use and behoof of him the said John R West his heirs and assigns forever and the said Peter Carlton for himself his heirs Executors and Administrators doth covenant and grant to and with said John R West his heirs and assigns by them present that the said John R West his heirs and assigns shall and lawfully may after the death of the said Peter Carlton and forever thereafter peacibly and quietly have and hold possess use and enjoy the said granted lands and premises free from all former gifts grants incumbrances had made or done or Suffered to be made or done by him the said Peter Carlton his heirs Executors or Administrators or any other person or persons Lawfully claiming or to claim by from or under him them or any or either of them reserving Nevertheless the use and possession of the said granted land and premises to himself the said Peter Carlton during the term of his Natural life In witness where of I the said Peter Carlton have here unto set my hand and affixed my seal the day and year first above written signed sealed and delivered in the presence of us Test Edward C.
