Oats & Wife to Mathew Mason
Deed of 295 acres of lands
This indenture made this 5th day of April in the seventh year of the American
Independence and in the year of our Lord Christ one thousand seven hundred and eighty
three between Jesse Oats & Louhannah his wife of the County of Duplin of the one part
and Mathew Mason of the same County, planters of the other part witnesseth that the
said Jesse Oats and Louhannah his wife for and in consideration of the sum of seventy
five pounds specie to them in hand paid at and before the sealing and delivery of these
presents by the said Mathew Mason the receipt whereof and of every part and parcel
thereof is hereby acknowledged have granted, bargined and sold, aliened, enfeossed,
released and confirmed, and by these presents do grant bargain & sell alien enfeoss
release and confirm unto the said Mathew Mason his heirs and assigns forever one certain
tract of parcel of land situate lying and being in the County of Duplin aforesaid on
the North side of Goshen Swamp containing by estimation two hundred & ninety five acres
be the same more or less and bounded as followeth to wit. Begining at a sweet gum on the
North side of said swamp, thence running North 24 &1/2 West 20 poles to a small red oak
in Goodman's line, thence along Goodman's line North 69 East 144 poles to a red oak
Goodman's corner, thence along his line North 29 West 164 poles to a red oak, thence North
50 & 1/2 East 90 poles to a pine, thence South 65 East 126 pole to a pine in the edge of
a pond, thence South 2 & 1/2 West 230 poles to a pine in the edge of Goshen Swamp, thence
the various courses of the same to the first station to have and to hold the said granted
and bargained premises with all and singular the appurtenances thence unto belonging or in
any wise appertaining to the said Mathew Mason his heirs and assigns forever to th only
proper use and behoof of him the said Mathew Mason his heirs and assigns forever. And the
said Jesse Oats for himself his heirs executors and administrations doth covenant promise
and agree to and with the said Mathew Mason his heirs and assigns the said tract of land
and premises with forever warrant and defend to the said Mathew Mason his heirs & assigns
against the right title claim and demand of all and all manner of persons. In witness
whereof the said Jesse Oats and Louhannah his wife have hereunto set their hands and
affixed their seals the day and year first above written.
