(Transcribed by Joan S Dunn) Deed Book 1 A Page 119 & 120 Margaret New To John Hill Lease 200 acres lands This indenture made the third day of January in the ninth year of the American Independence, and in the year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred & eighty five, between Margaret New of the County of Duplin in the State of North Carolian widow of the one part, John Hill of the same place of the other part Witnesseth, that for and in consideration of the sum of sixteen pounds current money well and truly paid by the said John Hill the receipt whereof she the said Margaret New doth hereby acknowledge and herself therewith to be fully satisfied contented and paid, she the said Margaret New hath demised granted and to farm better & by these presents doth demise grant & to farm set unto the said John Hill all that messuage or tenements of land situate lying & being in the County of Duplin & in the State of North Carolina aforesaid, on the South side of Goshen Swamp opposite the lake. Begining at a Cypress on the run of Goshen swamp, runing thence So. 17 Wt. 120 pole to a small black oak thence No. 83 Et. 140 pole to a black oak, thence So. 41 Et. 60 pole to a black oak, thence So. 78 Et. 120 pole to a pine, thence No. 55 Et. 94 pole to a water oak, thence No. 17 Et. 18 pole to a water oak on the run of Goshen Swamp, thence up the swamp to the begining & containing in the whole two hundred acres of land, it being the land & plantation wheron the said Margaret New now lives, and which she holds by virtue of the last will and Testament of her late husband John New, deceased, for and during the term of her own life & no longer etc. with all and singular the profits commoditied & appertenances to the said messuage or tenements belonging or appertaining. To have and to hold the said messuage or tenement & all and singular the premises, with their and every of their appertenances herein before mentioned or intended to be hereby demised unto the said John Hill his executors administrators or assigns from the date hereof for and during the term of her the said Margaret New's life & no longer, he the said John Hill yielding & paying the taxes or yearly rents which from this date during the life time of the said Margaret New may become due and payable to the State or the United States according to law, and also agreeing by these presents to deliver up the said 200 acres of land and tenements, immedeately upon the death of the said Margaret New to the proper heirs or executors of the said John New deceased agreeable to law etc. & ths said Margaret New on these considerations doth hereby covenant & engage and agree to warrant secure & defend the said John Hill his heirs executors and administrators in the quiet and peaceble possion of the said two hundred acres of land and premises, for and during the term of her life as aforesaid and no linger, from & against her the said Margaret New her heirs executors administrators or assigns, and from & against all and every other person or persons whatsoever, claiming or to claim any right title or interest of in or to the same or any part or parcel thereof. In witness whereof the said Margaret New hath hereunto set her hand & affixed her seal, the day & date above written. Margaret New Signed sealed & delivered in the presence of us Wm. Kenan Edward Harris State of No. Carolina, Duplin County, January Court 1785. There was the within deed proved in open Court by the oath of Edward Harris & ordered to be registered. Test W.
