(Transcribed by Hunt Sanders) (Duplin Co, NC. Deed Book 1A, pp405-7) Lewis Barnes To Bryan Whitfield Deed for sundry pieces lands. To all to whom these presents shall come greeting. Know ye, that I Lewis Barnes of the County of Duplin & State of No Carolina for and in consideration of the sum of five hundred pounds specie to me in hand paid by Bryan Whitfield of the County of Dobbs and State aforesaid, the receipt whereof I do hereby acknowledge that I am therewith fully satisfied contented & paid, Hath Page 406. bargained & sold, and by these presents doth fully freely and absolutely give grant bargain sell alien convey & confirm assign & make over unto him the said Bryan Whitfield his heirs and assigns forever five certain tracts or parcels of lands, lying on Burncoat swamp in Duplin County (To wit,) one patent granted to Anthony Williams for six hundred and forty acres, Begining at a Red oak & runs So 22 Ea 160 poles to a Pine, thence No 65 Ea 640 poles to a Pine, thence No 25 Wt 160 po to a pine on Burncoat swamp, thence down with the courses of the swamp So 62 Wt 640 poles to the first station, one pattent granted to the said Lewis Barnes for one hundred and fifty six acres joining the above, Begining at a Loblolly Bay in white oak swamp, thence to and with Lewis Smiths’s line No 55 Wt 127 pole to a pine, thence No 65 Ea 266 pole to a Black Jack, thence to and with Harwell’s line So 25 Ea 76 poles to a Stake in Thomas Shelton’s line, thence So 65 Wt 72 pole to a Red oak white oak & Black Jack, thence So 20 Ea 40 poles to a Gum in white oak swamp and down the same as it meanders to the begining, one pattent granted to the said Lewis Barnes for two hundred acres lying on the head of Burncoat & panther Branches, Begining at a stake in a marsh of Burncoat, the head of the old Mill Branch, Samuel Jones’s corner, second corner of his two hundred acre survey and runs So 114 poles to a Stake Jones Boyet’s corner, thence No 182 pole to a pine in Montford’s line, thence No 26 poles to a stake, thence Ea 10 pole to a pine, thence No 88 poles to a Stake, thence the course continue 70 poles to a pine, thence Harwell’s line No 65 Ea 130 poles to a stake, thence to the begining, one patent granted to Joseph Sutton for one hundred acres lying on the No side of Burncoat, Begining at a Spanish oak above the mouth of Prescoat’s Branch, and runs thence No 50 Ea 130 poles to a pine, thence No 40 Wt 30 poles to a pine, thence So 50 Wt 120 poles to a Black Jack near Robert Beverly’s line thence to the begining, and one pattent granted to James Outlaw for one hundred and eighty acres, lying on the No side of Burncoat swamp, Begining at a Black gum in the swamp of Prescoat’s Branch about 20 poles above the mouth of it and runs thence to and with Joseph Page 407. Sutton’s line No 50 Ea 144 poles to a pine, thence No 40 Wt 100 poles to a pine, thence No 50 Ea 120 pole to a pine, thence So 40 Ea 220 pole to a Black Gum at the run of Burncoat swamp, then down the run as it meanders to the mouth of Prescoat’s Branck, and thence up the branch to the begining; containing in the whole one thousand two hundred and eighty four acres, with all pattent deeds conveyances and writings touching the same togeather with all houses edifices buildings & improvements, with all ways waters and water courses, mills and mill seats woods & underwoods, and all the conveniences and priviledges thereunto belonging or in any ways appertaining. To have and to hold the bargained lands and premises and all the appurtenances and priviledges thereunto belonging, unto him the said Bryan Whitfield his heirs and assigns forever, to his & their only proper use benefit & behoofe forever, and I the said Lewis Barnes for myself my heirs executors and administrators do covenant & agree to warrant and forever defend the said land & premises & every part & parcel thereof unto the said Bryan Whitfield his heirs & assigns forever, against the lawfull claims of all persons whatsoever, In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand & fixed my seal this 14th day of October 1786.
