John E Hussy to AcD Maxwell
Bill of sale for Benjm Williams Interest in the Negroes of Josd Cranford deed
This Indenture made this 18th day of April AD 1839 between John E. Hussy Sheriff of
the County of Duplin of the first part and Archabald Maxwell of the second part Whereas
the said Archabald Maxwell siced out an original attachment from under the hand of
John Hunter Esqr one of the voting justices of the peace in and for the County of
Duplin against one Benjamin Williams on the 21st day of April AD 1819 which was placed
in the hands of one Andrew Hurst then Sheriff of this County of Duplin who be one
Joseph Stoakes then acting as his deputy in his said office of Sheriff did Levy the
same on the interest of the said Benjamin Williams in and to the following Negroes
(viz) Cotten Dillis and Rilly with their increase belonging to the Estate of John
Cranford decd the Father of the sife of said Benjamin Williams and the said Attachment
being duly returned to the July term Session of the Court of Please and Quarter Sessions
for the County of Duplin and after due advertisement agreeably to the provisions of an
act of the general Assembly in such cases made and proved the said cause by attachment
being continued from term to term of said Court untill the April Session of the said
Court when ajudgment was obtained by the said Maxwell against the said Williams for the
sum of Four hundred and seventy two Dollars and costs when upon a writ of Fieri facias
was duly Issued from office of the Clerk of the said Court in Favour of the said Archabald
Maxwell against the said Benjamin Williams tested of the said April Sessions of the said
Court AD 1820 for the said sum of $472 and costs and was placed in the hands of the said
Andrew Hurst then Sheriff as aforesaid which was Returned not satisfied to the next suceeding
Term of the said Court and executions or writs of fieri Facias Issued in like manner from
term to term with the like Return thereon unti8ll the January term of the said Court 1821
when an other writ of fieri facias in like manner of of the like term was placed in said
A Hursts hand Sheriff as aforesaid who after due advertisement agreeably to law did on the
day of April AD 1821 expose to sale by public vendue the interest of the said Benjamin
Williams in and to the said Negroes at the Court House door in the Town of Kenansville Duplin
County when and where the said Archabald Maxwell become the Last and highest bidder at the
sum of Twenty dollars Now then for this Indenture witnesseth that the said John E. Hussey
Sheriff of the County of Duplin by virtue of his office Sheriff for and inconsideration of
the said sum of Twenty dollars to him in hand paid at or before the ensealing & delivery of
these presents the receipt whereof he doth hereby acknowledge hath granted bargained sold
& delivered and by these presents doth grant bargain sell and deliver To the said Archabald
Maxwell all the right title Interest claim property and demand of him the said Benjamin
Williams in and to the said Negroes with their increase being one one undivided Ninth part
of the same in right of his said Wife to have and to hold the said ninth part of the said
undivid slaves to him the said Archabald Maxwell his heirs Extrs Administrators forever
and the said John E. Hussy Sheriff as aforesaid for himself his Executors and Administrators
the above described undivided Ninth part of the said Negro Slaves unto him the said Archabald
Maxwell his Executors Administrators and assigns shall and will and by their presents doth
forever warrant & defend against the Lawfull claim or claims of him the said John E. Hussy
his Executors and Administrators and against the Lawful claim or claim of all persons
whatsoever in as full and ample a manner as he the said John E. Hussy by virtue of his said
officer impowerment to do and no further In witness whereof he doth hereunto set his hand
and seal the date first above written.

The Execution of the within Bill of sale is duly acknowledged in open Court by John E. Hussy
and is ordered to be Registered
