James Kenan To James Torrans
Deed for 320 acres lands
This indenture made the twenty sixth day of February in the year of our Lord one
thousand seven hundred and eighty eight & in the twelveth year of our Independence. Between
James Kenan of Duplin County & State of No. Carolina of the one part and James Torrans of
the County & State aforesaid of the other part Witnesseth that I James Kenan for and in
consideration of the sum of two hundred pounds current money of the said State of No.
Carolina aforesaid in hand to me well & truly paid the receipt whereof I do hereby acknowledge
myself paid, hath bargained sold conveyed set over unto the said James Torrans his heirs &
assigns & I do by these presents freely fully & absolutely bargain sell convey & set over
unto the said James Torrans his heirs & assigns, all that parcel & tract of land situate
lying and being in the County of Duplin on the north side of Turkey Swamp. Begining at the
edge of the main run of Turkey swamp, formerly Thomas Kenan's upper corner, now Michael
Johnston Kenan's upper corner, on the edge of the main run of said swamp & runing thence
along Michael J. Kenan's line No. 40 Wt. 74 poles to a pine Michel Johnston Kenan's other
corner, thence No. 57 Et. 248 poles to a stake the center of three pines, thence So. 34 Et.
23 poles to a gum on the edge of the main run of Turkey Swamp, thence down the main run to
the begining, containing eighty acres more or less, being part of a large tract of land
containing seventy one thousand one hundred & sixty acres granted to Henry McCulloch, the
patent bearing date 1745, & made over by deed to Henry McCulloch & Henry Eustace McCulloch
to Michael J. Kenan bearing date 1768, & made over since by Michael Johnston Kenan to James
Kenan the deed bearing date 1779, & also one other tract or parcel of land situate lying &
being on the north side of Turkey Swamp. Begining at a pine Michael J. Kenan's corner tree
& a corner tree of the above mentioned eighty acres & runs thence No. 35 Wt. 55 poles to a
white oak & Holly on the run of a small branch, thence up the run of said branch No. 10 Et.
the straight line 60 poles to a gum in a bent, thence No. 46 Et. 24 pole to a white oak,
thence No. 25 Et. 80 poles to a pine, thence No. 30 Wt. 70 pole to a pine by a pond in the
back line, thence along the back line of the patent No. 75 Et. 138 poles to a gum in Benjamin
Johnston's branch, thence down the meanders of said branch & Benjamin Johnston's line 180
poles to a stake, thence along the old line of eighty acres to the begining, containing two
hundred & forty acres more or less, being part of four hundred & forty acres granted to James
Kenan the patent bearing date 178. The tract within mentioned eighty acres & the tract of two
hundred & forty make in the whole three hundred & twney acres be the same more or less, which
said lands I the said James Kenan do by these presents warrant and forever defend against me
my heirs executors administrators & assigns & against the lawfull claim or claims of any person
or persons whatsoever unto the said James Torrans his heirs executors administrators or assigns
forever. In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand & seal the day & date first above
written.
