(Transcribed by Joan S Dunn) Deed Book 1 A Page 194, & 195 George Smith To John Herring Deed for 450 acres lands State of No. Carolina Duplin County. To all to whom these presents shall come greeting. Know ye that I George Smith farmer, of the State and County aforesaid, for and in consideration of the sum of one hundred pounds in gold and silver to me in hand paid by John Herring of the same State and County of Dobbs farmer, at and before the ensealing and delivery of these presents, the receipt whereof I do hereby acknowledge that I am therewith fully satisfied contented and paid, and by these presents do fully freely and absolutely give grant bargain sell alien convey & confirm assign and set over unto him the said John Herring his heirs and assigns forever a certain tract or parcel of land lying and being in the aforesaid County of Duplin on the south side of the No. East marsh and on both sides of the Beaver dam Branch above Richard Roberts'es land as was formerly, now Lewis Graddy's. Begining at a red oak below Gufford's line and runs No. 20 Wt. 220 pole to a black jack, thence No. 70 Et. 220 poles to a pine, thence So. 20 Et. 220 poles to a stake, thence up to the begining containing three hundred acres be the same more or less, it being a tract of land granted to William Godwin bearing date the seventh of April Anno Domino 1770 also the other part or parcel of land. Begining at a Hickory near Samuel Johnston's line on the Myrery Branch and runs with Johnston's line So. 10 Et. 190 poles to a black Jack to a line of the other parcel of land, thence with that line So. 70 Wt. to a black jack the corner, thence along a roe of blazed trees to Samuel Rogers'es corner a black jack, thence along his line to a poplar in the mouth of a small branch, thence the courses of the patent to the begining, it being part of a tract granted by paten to the said George Smith bearing date 1780, containing by estimation 150 acres be the same more or less. To have and to hold the said bargained land and premises withthe appurtenances thereunto belonging or in any wise appertaining to him the said John Herring his heirs and assigns forever, to him or their only proper use benefit and behoofe forever, and I the said George Smith for me myself my heirs executors administrators or assigns doth covenant grant and agree to and with the said John Herring his heirs executors administrators or assigns forever, free and clear of all incumbrances of what nature or kind soever, (accepting what land Johnston's line takes) the guit rents becoming due to the State only excepted, in as full an ample a manner or any can devise, hereby covenanting to warrent & defend the said land and premises and every part and parcel, thereof unto him the said John Herring his heirs executors administrators assigns forever, against the lawfull claim or claims of any person or persons whatsoever. In witness, whereof I the said George Smith have hereunto set my hand & fixed my seal the fifty day of September Anno Domino 1782. George Smith Signed Sealed & delivered in presence of us Jesse Croom William Smith Duplin County July Court 1785. The was the within deed acknowledged in open Court & ordered to be registered.
