(Transcribed by Joan S Dunn) Deed Book 1 A Page 456, & 457 Charles Wooten & Wife To Lewis Thomas Deed for 242 acres lands This indenture made the 12 day of August & in the 10th year of American Independency one thousand seven hundred & eighty five Between Charles Wooten of Batie County & State of No. Carolina, planter, of the one part & Lewis Thomas of Duplin County & State aforesaid, planter, of the other part witnesseth, that he the said Charles Wooten for and in consideration of the sum of two hundred pounds current money of this State to him in hand paid at the ensealing & delivering of these presents the receipt whereof is hereby acknowledged & the said Charles Wooten he the said Lewis Thomas doth exonerate acquit & discharge & hath bargained granted & sold & by these presence doth fully & absolutely grant bargain sell alien convey & confirm unto him the said Lewis Thomas his heirs and assigns forever, a certain tract or parcel of land lying & being in Duplin County & butted & bounded as follows Viz. on the head of the Grove Swamp. Begining at an ash on the main run of the said swamp, runing thence No. 11 Wt. 243 poles to a pine, thence No. 79 Et. 160 poles to a stake between a pine & a black jack, thence So. 11 Et. 242 poles to a stake about ten poles from the run of said swamp, thence up the same to the begining, and containing in the whole two hundred & forty two acres of land, together with all houses & buildings thereon contained. To have & to hold the said tract of land & premises above mentioned & all & singular the appurtenances profits & hereditaments with all woods & all previledges thereunto belonging or in any wise appertaining to him the said Lewis Thomas his heirs & assigns forever, & I the said Charles Wooten & Ann my wife do hereby for ourselves our heirs executors admninstrators & assigns covenant premise grant to and with the said Lewis Thomas his heirs & assigns, that I the said Charles Wooten & Ann my wife at the time of ensealing & delivering hereof am the true sole & lawfull owner of the said tract of land and premises above mentioned & have in ourselves good right full power and lawfull authority to grant bargain & sell the same in manner aforesaid & that the said Lewis Thomas his heirs & assigns shall and may from time to time & at all times forever hereafter lawfully peacebly & quietly have hold use occupy possess & enjoy the said tract of land & premises with the appurtenances thereunto belonging without any let suit trouble disturbance or interruption of us the said Charles Wooten & Ann my wife our heirs executors administrators or assigns or of any other person or persons whatsoever, claiming by from or under us or of any of us & that the said tract of land premiseds at the day hereof on & so shall remain & forever continue & be unto him the said Lewis Thomas his heirs & assigns forever, free & clear & freely & clearly acquitted exonerated & discharged of and from all manner of former or other gifts grants bargains leases mortgages will intails jointures rents & arrearages of rents quit rents & widows dowers & all other incumbrances whatsoever, & the said Charles Wooten for himself his heirs executors administrators doth covenant promise grant & agree to & with the said Lewis Thomas in manner & form following Viz. that he the said Charles Wooten & his heirs shall & will at the request of & at the proper cost & charges of the said Lewis Thomas at any time or times when thereunto demanded make perform acknowledge & execute or cause or suffer to be made acknowledged preformed & executed, all and every such act & act deed & deeds which the said Lewis Thomas his heirs executors administrators or assigns, or his or their Councel learned in the law shall be advised or required, better and further assuring & sure making & establishing the said land unto the said Lewis Thomas his heirs executors administrators & assigns forever. In whereof the said Charles Wooten & Ann his wife hath hereunto set their hands & seals the day & year of ouf Lord above written.
