Austen Bryan To Lincoln Shuffield & Mary Shuffield
Deed 500 acres
This Indenture made the thirty first day of October in the thirteenth year of American
Independence and in the year of our Lord Christ one thousand seven hundred and Eighty nine.
Between Austin Bryan of the State of North Carolina and County of Duplin of the one part, and
Lincoln Shuffield and Mary Shuffield Children of Isom Shuffield Late of Duplin County Deceased
of the other part Witnesseth that the said Austin Bryan for Diverse good Causes and Considerations
him thereunto moving as also for the valuable consideration of the sum of fifty pounds specie to
him in hand well and truly paid By Robert Dickson of the State and County aforesaid before the
sealing and Delivery of these presents the receipt whereof the said Austin Bryan doth hereby
acknowledge himself to be therewith fully satisfied Contented and paid hath by these presents
given granted Bargained sold assignes and set over to the said Lincoln Shuffield and Mary Shuffield
and to the Heirs of their Bodies Lawfully Begotten the following Tracts of Land situate lying and
being in Duplin County aforesaid and are bounded as follows Viz. One Tract Containing one Hundred
acres lying on the East side of the North East River above the mouth of Muddy Creek Begining at a
large Pine Jesper Coxes Corner tree near the River thence along that line to a pine near a Pond
thence by a dividing line to a sweet gum in a Branch called Stafford Branch thence by a Row of
Marked trees to a live oak in the River swamp thence up the River to the first station also one
other tract on the west side of the No. East River above the Mouth of Maxwell swamp Begining where
the River and Creek joins thence up the River as it Meanders to a Bent which on a straigh line is
No. 36 Et. 76 poles thence by various Courses 100 poles to a water oak thence No. 54 Wt. 230 poles
to a pine thence So. 36 Wt. 140 poles to a Cypress in the run of Maxwell swamp thence Douwn the
same as it Meanders to the Begining containg 110 acres also one other tract on the East side of the
No. East River Including the House and part of the Improvements where the said Isom Shuffield formerly
Dwelt, next before his Death Begining at a water oak and pine on the RIver Bank above the Landing
and runs thence No. 75 Et. 36 poles to a stake at the first Corner of Jesper Coxes 400 acres survey
thence down along the Inside line of said Paten So. 15 Et. 86 poles to a stake thence along James
Lockharts line So. 75 Wt. 114 poles to a Blakc jack thence So. 20 Wt. 22 poles to a pine Lockharts
Corner of Land Patened by James Picket thence along that line So. 65 Wt. 208 poles to a white oak on
the River Bank thence up the River by various courses as it Meanders to the Begining containing one
Hundred and fifty acres granted to Isom Shuffield by Paten and also one other paten of one Hundred
acres by Paten near or joining the back of Jesper Coxes 400 acres survey Refernece to the Paten or
Record for the courses will more fully appear which siad four Tracts of parcils of Land Containing in
the whole by Estimation five hundred acres by the same more or less being the contents of a Deed from
James Pearsall sheriff to the said Austin Bryan Bearing date the 30 day of April 1789. Reference to
the daid Deede for course and Late may more fully appear. To have and to hold the said five hundred
acres of Land and premises with all the appurtainances to the same Belonging or in any wise appertaining
to the said Lincoln Shuffield and Mary Shuffield and the heirs of theis Bodys Lawfully Begotten to them
& their only proper use benefit and Behoofe and the said Lincoln Shuffield and Mary Shuffield and the
heirs of their Bodys Lawfylly Begotten the aforesaid Land and presmises with the appertainances thereto
Belonging shall and May after the third Day of April which will be in the year of our Lord one thousand
seven hundred and Ninety nine have hold use occupy Enjoy and possess as their own free and Lawfull
Inheritance In as full and ample a manner as he the said Austin Byran by his Deed from James Pearsall
Sheriff might oar could have Enjoyed and the said Austin Bryan the aforesaid Land and premises with all
the appurtainances to the same belonging or in any wise to the appurtaining to them the said Lincoln
Shuffield and Mary Shuffield and the Heirs of their Bodys Lawfully Begotten after the third Day of April
which will be in the year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred and ninety nine shall and will warrant
and forever Defend as aforesaid-proveded never the less and it is hereby Expressly Declared and and ment
by these presents that should the said Lincoln Shuffield and Mary Shuffield Die without Heirs of their
Bodys Lawfully Begotten that then the one half of the aforesaid Tracts of parcels of Land as herein before
Described is according to Quantity and quality to Revert back to the said Austin Byran his Heirs and
assigns forever and the other half thereof to Robert Dickson aforesaid to him and his heirs forever In
Witness whereof the said Austin Bryan agreeable to the within the several Restructions therein mentioned
and according to the true meaning thereof hath hereunto set his hand and seal at Duplin the Date
aforesaid
