Alex. Laine To William Kenan
Deed for 430 acres of lands
This indenture made this 5th day of November in the year of our Lord one thousand seven
hundred & eighty four and in the ninth year of American Independence, between Alexander Lane of
the one part and William Kenan of the other part, both of the County and State aforesaid, planter.
Witnesseth that the said Alexander Lane for & in consideration of the sum of five hundred pounds
specie to him in hand well & truly paid before the ensealing & delivery of these presents, the
receipt whereof he the said Alexander Lane doth hereby acknowledge himself to be therewith fully
satisfied contented and paid, he the said Alexander Lane hath bargained sold aliened enfeoffed
conveyed & confirmed to him the said William Kenan his heirs & assigns forever, a certain tract
or parcel of land situate lying and being in the County aforesaid (being the land where on the
said Alexander Lane now lives) on the So. side of Nuhunga swamp. Begining at a stake at the
run of the swamp & runs as George Cooper's line So. 17 Et. 36 poles to a white oak and poplar
his corner in a branch, thence up the branch by various courses about a south course 100 poles
to two seeet gums in said branch Cooper's corner, thence along said Cooper's line due So. 88
poles to a pine and black jack his corner, thence along Ephraim Boyd's line Wt. 104 poles to a
stake his corner, thence No. 85 Wt. 184 poles to a small pine, thence No. 10 Et. 110 poles to a
Hickory, thence No. 37 Wt. 11 poles to a white oak, Lewis Thomes'es corner formerly Abraham
Mattew's corner, thence Thomas' line No. 15 Et. 160 poles to a water oak on the run of Nahunga,
thence down the run as it meanders to the begining, containing four hundred and thirty acres.
To have and to hold to him the said William Kenan his heirs & assigns forever, the above bargained
land and premises, together with all buildings edifices orchards and all other appertenances
thereunto belonging or in any wise appertaining of any nature or kind whatsoever & he the said
Alexander Lane for himself his heirs executors administrators & assigns the above bargained land
and premises doth and shall forever warrant & defend to him the said William Kenan his heirs
and assigns forever, to them and their only proper use benefit & behoof free from all former
gifts grants judgements mortgages dowers intails or any other incumbrances whatsoever given or
granted by him the said Alexander Lane and he the said William Kenan his heirs and assigns the
above bargained land & premises shall and may from time to time and at all times, have hold use
occupy enjoy and possess as his own free and lawful inheritance free and clear from all set
hindrance or molestation forever from him the said Alexander Lane his heirs and assigns & he
the said Alexander Lane doth for himself his heirs & assigns covenant & agree to execute all
every such conveyance or instrument or writing to him the said Wm. Kenan his heirs and assigns
as his or their council learned in the law shall judge necessary for the better security of all
and singular the above bargained premises and appertenances and he the said Alexander Lane his
heirs executors administrators and assigns the above bargained premises shall warrant, and forever
defend to the said William Kenan his heirs and assigns against the just and lawfull claim of
any person or persons claiming or to claim or any other incumbrances whatsoever to him the said
William Kenan his heirs & assigns forever. In witness whereof the said Alexander Lane hath
hereunto set his hand affixed his seal the day and year first above written.
