(Transcribed by Joan S Dunn) Deed Book 1 A Page 1 & 2 William Houston Senr. to Edward Houston Deed 360 acres of Land This Indenture made the 13th day of May in the eight year of American Independance, and in the year of our Lord Christ one thousand seven hundred and eighty four between William Houston, Esqr. of the State of North Carolina and County of Duplin of the one part. Witnesseth that the said William Houston Esqr. for divers good causes and consideration him therunto moving but more expecially for the valuable consideration of the sum of one dollar to him in hand well and truly paid by the said Edward Houston aforesaid before the ensealing and delivery of these presents the receipt whereof he doth hereby acknowledge to be here with fully contended and paid hath by the present given, granted, bargained, sold assigned and set over to the said Edward Houston his heirs & assigns forever, one certain tract or parcel of land situate lying and being in Duplin County aforesaid in the east side of the North East River of Cape Fear and being part of a tract of land of eight hundred and forty acres which was granted to Henry McCulloh Esqr. bearing date the third of March 1745 and thence it was granted to William Houston Esqr. by an act of General Assembly in May 1780 reference being had may more fully appear begining at a stake on the River Griffith Houston lower corner and runs with his line South forty six degrees East three hundred and forty six poles to a stake on the back lin, thence with that line thence with that line South twenty degrees west fifty eight poles to a stake, thence North Seventy west one hunddred and forty poles to a water oak & gum in Bridle Branch, thence down the various courses of said Branch Soth eighty three two hundred and ninety poles to a white oak on the River thence up the various courses of the River to the begining in whole three hundred and sixty eight acres be the same more or less to have & hold the aforesaid land and premises with all the appurtenances to the same belonging or in any wise appertaining of every nature as kind whatsoever to him the said Edward Houston his heirs & assigns forever free from all former gifts, grants, mortgages, intails, dowers rights or titles of dowers or any incumbrances whatsoever given, granted or done by him the said William Houston, Esqr. or any person whatsoever by from or under him and the said William Houston, Esqr. the aforesaid land and premises shall and will warrant and defent to him the said Edward Houston his heirs and assigns forever again him the said William Houston Esqr. his heirs and assigns to the said Edward Houston the aforesaid land and premises shall and may have and hold occupy enjoy and possess at his own fee and lawful inheritance fee & clean from all incumbrances whatsoever. And the sail William Houston Esqr. and his wife shall during their natural lives or as long as they please to live on the said premises the same as if this deed had never been executed to the aforesaid Edward Houston his heirs or assigns and the Taxes as they become due hereafter to be paid by the said Wm. Houston Esqr. so long as he continues said lands. In witness whereof the said William Houston Esqr. have hereinto set his hand and seal the date above written. Wm. Houston, Senr.
