William Wright Washington Wilson, Private, CSA

William W. Wilson enlisted as a Private at Camp Holmes, Wilmington, NC on 6 Mar 1862.  
J. W. Lippitt enlisted him.  His age was 21 and the record reflects that he was a farmer from 
Duplin County.  His height was listed as 5 feet 4 inches.  Private Wilson enlisted into 
Company G, 51st Regiment, NC Infantry (State Troops).  In November and December of 
1862, he was listed on the rolls as absent because of being sick.  He was present for duty 
from January 1863 until 24 Dec 1863 when the unit rolls reflect that he was absent without
leave.  The roll for January-February 1864 shows that he was absent without leave for thirty 
days and that he was under arrest.  The next entry is for April-August 1864 and reflects that 
he was absent in Duplin County from a wound received 16 Mar 1864.  In his CSA record for 
this same date is a receipt for clothing.  Private Wilson is on the rolls of Jackson Hospital in 
Richmond, Virginia on 17 May 1864.  He was transferred to Camp Winder Hospital in 
Richmond, Virginia on 29 May 1864.  The last entry in his record reflects that he was absent 
without leave from September 1864 until 3 Dec 1864.  

The 51st Infantry Regiment was organized at Wilmington, North Carolina, in April, 1862.  
Captain James W. Lippitt was commander of Company G.  It was assigned to General 
Clingman's Brigade and served under him for the duration of the war. After fighting at 
Goldsboro, it moved to the Charleston area and was prominent in the defense of Battery 
Wagner. The 51st was then ordered to Virginia, participated in the battles at Drewry's Bluff 
and Cold Harbor, and endured the hardships of the Petersburg siege south and north of the 
James River. Returning to North Carolina, the Regiment saw action at Bentonville . 

William Wright Washington Wilson was the son of James Dickson Wilson and Elizabeth 
Hollingsworth.  He was born 27 Jun 1843 and died in Magnolia, NC on 3 Mar 1922.  William 
was married to Sarah Frances Faison, daughter of William Faison and Sallie Holloman.  Both
 are buried in the Magnolia Cemetery, Magnolia, NC.  .
