Thomas James Herring

Thomas James Herring, was born in Sampson County, N.C. and was listed as a farmer prior to enlisting in the Confederate Army. He joined along with Walter Raleigh Bell, his brother-in-law the 51st North Carolina Infantry Regiment, Company B in Duplin County at the age of 20. Appointed 3rd Lieutenant on March 08, 1862. Promoted to 2nd Lieutenant on April 09, 1863. Wounded at Fort Wagner, Charleston, South Carolina, July 18, 1863. Returned to duty in September-October, 1863. Present or accounted for until wounded in the head at the battle of Cold Harbor, Virginia, June 1, 1864. Promoted to 1st Lieutenant on July 09, 1864. Promoted to Captain on November 04, 1864. Returned to duty in November-December, 1864. Paroled at Greensboro on Mat 10, 1865.
