THOMAS FRYAR - Sergeant Company A - 61st Regiment North Carolina Infantry CSA

Thomas Fryar was born 22 March 1829 and died 29 June 1903, in Magnolia, Duplin co. N.C. 
and is buried in Magnolia.

Thomas was the son of William Fryar and Molsey Gregory and the Grandson of Jonathan Fryar, RS.

He was married to Martha Jane “Mattie” Carroll, daughter of John Durham Carroll and Zilphia Chesnutt.

Thomas Fryar, enlisted on 20 April 1861, as a Sergeant, the records in the Duplin Courthouse, 
show that Thomas and his brothers Henry Fryar and Owen Fryar enlisted on the same day.

Thomas previously served as Sergeant in Capt. William S. Devane’s Independent Company N. C. 
Troops. He transferred to this company on or about September 6, 1862.
Thomas saw duty with General Clingman’s Brigade; it marched to Kingston where it engaged in 
its first battle. The 61st. was ordered to Virginia and fought at the battle of Drewy’s Bluff and 
Cold Harbor.  They were prominent at the Battle of Bentonville. In July 1863 they were at the 
Battle of Charleston.
Thomas Fryar was discharged due to disability March 28, 1864.

I joined the United Daughters of the Confederacy using Thomas Fryar as my CSA soldier.
I have copies of his CSA Military Records.

Thomas Fryar was my Great Grandfather.
