Kilby Salmon

Kilby Salmon was born September 10th 1817 in Sampson Co. to Eliza and Thama Salmon. Kilby's grandfather William fought in the Revolutionary War at Moores Creek Battle in/or about Wilminton, NC.
Kilby married Ann J. in 1854. They had two(2) daughters, Nancy 1854, and Margaret E. Salmon 1858, and one (1) son Jacob J. Salmon 1856.




Census report Aug. 9th 1860 report #880: Kilby Salmon age 44 farmer with 2000 acres, net worth $2300




Kilby Salmon enlisted in the Army of the Confederate States on March 3, 1862. The Wallace NC "Turpentine Boy's", as they were know were mustered in Wilington, NC in the 30 Inf. Co. E.




March 8th 1862 Receipt Roll in Wilmington indicates Kilby Salmon "the named above for $50 bounty, allowed-by the Confederate States for enlisting for the war for three years." further states "hereby certify that the man whose name appears for this roll has been examined by a surgon, is fit to serve and regulary mustered. Col. F.M Parker




May 16th 1862, Kilby was admitted to the C.S.A Military Hospital No.4 Wilmington, NC for Rubeola. Same was discharged and returned to active duty on May 17th 1862.




On May 29th, 1862 Kilby was given a Certificate of Disability for Discharge, from the Army of the Confederate States, by Col. F.M Parker Commanding the Post.




Kilby then transfered to the 8th NC Senior Reserves unit under Capt. Broadhurst. This regiment was organized about Dec. 2, 1864 In a 8th Reg. NC reserves Muster Roll dated May 29, 1864, in Kennansville, NC, notes the following. Kilby Salmon was 5'7", with fair complexion, dark hair w/ grey eye's. Occupation: Farmer




Kilby's grave and marker can be found in the Rockfish Pre. Church on Hwy 41 west out of Wallace. It is in the 1st row by the side entrance door to the fellowship hall.
