Contributed by: Ada Dunn John Mercer, Private Company I, 9th Regiment N.C.S.T. 1st Regiment N.C.Cavalry. Resided in Duplin County where he enlisted at age 31, June 22, 1861 for the war. May-June 1862 muster roll carries him as "wounded, at St. Charles Hospital, Richmond, Va." Present or accounted for through December 1864. Admitted to hospital at Raleigh, N.C., February 10, 1865 with "rheumatism" and returned to duty February 18, 1865. Source: North Carolina Troops: Volume II, page 85. Note: John Mercer was discharged, returned home, married, and had 7 children. He died 31 March 1886, just 2 days prior to the birth of his last child. |
