St. Johns Lodge, No. 13, was the original Masonic Lodge in Duplin County and was instituted June 25, 1791, about three and one-half years after the Grand Lodge of North Carolina was organized.

On Sept 10, 1864, a committee consisting of William A. Allen, William Farrior and G. W. Lamb, offered this resolution: "Whereas we have heard with pain and regret that our young and esteemed brother George Cooper, a gallant and patriotic soldier of Co A, 43 Regiment , N.C.T.., and a beloved and respected member of this lodge, departed this life on th 27day of May, last, in General Hospital No. 3, Richmond, Va., from the effects of a wound received in a skirmish with the enemy on the 24th, of the same month near Hanover Junction.
Therefore, Be it Resolved, That in the death of our brother, this lodge has lost another of its patriotic and devoted members, a companionable and pleasant associate, masonry an ardent friend, the community in which he lived an enlightened and generous-hearted citizen, and the country one of its best soldiers, cut off in the full vigor and bloom of manhood, full of life and the prospect of bright and happy days before him, sealing his devotion to the cause of republican government with his life's blood.

" Resolved that we tender to the deceased's family our warmest sympathy and condolence in their sad bereavement. Their great consolation should be that he died in the full discharge of patriotic duty, nobly battling for the right of his country.

" Resolved, that as a testimony of our high regard and esteem for our departed brother the members of this Lodge be requested to wear the usual badge of mourning for thirty days.

" Resolved, that these proceedings be spread upon the records of this Lodge and communicated by the Secretary to the bereaved family of the deceased and a copy of the same be furnished to the Wilmington Journal with the request that they be published."

George Cooper was raised in the Lodge in 1858.

George Cooper was the J.D. of the Lodge in 1859

They were greatly outnumbered by the Union troops, but after a battle the enemy withdrew. After the skirmish, it was found that there were more dead and wounded of the enemy than the whole number of Confederates participating.

North Anna

North Anna
Jericho Mill, Hanover Junction Virginia
American Civil War
May 23-26, 1864

After the fighting at Spotsylvania Court House, Grant continued his Overland Offensive against Lee's Army of Northern Virginia. He was brought up short on the North Anna River by Lee's widely studied "hog snout line," which forced Grant to divide his army into three parts in order to attack. On May 23, 1864, one of A.P. Hill's divisions assaulted the V Corps which had crossed the river at Jericho Mill, resulting in bloody see-saw fighting. On the 24th, Union infantry was repulsed at Ox Ford (the snout) but advanced to near the Doswell House on the Confederate right. Lee hoped to strike an offensive blow, but he was ill, and the opportunity for defeating an isolated part of the Federal army passed. Once the threat of Lee's position was revealed, Grant withdrew both wings of the army back across the North Anna River. Grant outflanked the position by moving downstream and continued his advance on Richmond.
