Richard A'Dialdon Smith and Lou Simmons Family Bible
Bible of Richard A'Dialdon Smith and Lou Simmons
Richard A'Dialdon (Aldon) Smith born Dec 11, 1859 in Wayne Co., son of Matthew
Smith and Zilphia Uzzell.
Married Jan. 13, 1886 to Lou Simmons in the home of her father Amos W. Simmons and
Exerline Garner, at Albertson, N.C. (the house is still standing and is for sail).
By LouGene S. Hemphill.
Note: This Bible is in very poor condition. In 1910 their daughter, Zilphia A. Smith
copied the family information.
(I have printed a book on this line of Smiths, "Benjamin Taylor Smith" of Wayne &
Duplin co., N.C.)
Loula (Lou) Simmons was the 5th child of Amos Simmons and Exerlin
Ann Garner. They lived at Albertson, Duplin Co.,N. C. Lou had sandy brown hair
and blue eyes, a sweet smile and a gentle nature.
The biggest snow in 1886 came on their wedding day. Despite this
"Aldon" rode his horse and buggy from his home in Indian Springs in Wayne
County to the home of his bride in Albertson Township, in Duplin Co. Upon arriving,
he was asked why he braved such a storm instead of waiting until later? His reply
was "Lou, I would have come if I'd had to crawl" This was a favorite family story and
one he was teased about many times through the years. After mariage, they lived
near his Grandfather John M. Uzzell on a farm given to him by his mother, Zilphia
Uzzell which she inherited. It is located on Highway 70, betwen La Grange and
Walnut Creek, in Wayne co. Their first 4 children were born there.
When J.B. Whifield died in Jan 18, 1894 his land was sold and they
bought it and they relocated in Duplin Co. on Highway 111 north of Outlaws
Bridge Church, 3 miles South of Wayne Co., line. Richard A'Dialdon's youngest
son, Faison Smigh inherited the home on July 1, 1936, which was 32+ acres.
At Faison's death Oct 5, 1984 his daughter, LouGene Smith Hemphill, inherited it.

In The year of 1900 a sad occasion in the lives of my grandparents
Richard A'Dialdon and Lou Simmons Smith, has been remembered through
several generations. Richard A'Dialdon and his brother James, married sisters.
James and his wife Sarah died of typhoid fever, 1 month apart leaving six small children.
After the funeral, the children were divided between their Aunt Tirzah
Grant and Uncle Richard A. Smith. Eula, Sannie and Richard Aldon (called Dunn)
approximately same age, as Lola, Zilphia and Ed, were taken home on horse and
buggy with Richard A. and Lou Smith, to grow up with their own eight children,
making a total of thirteen in the family.
Tirzah Ann (R. A'Dialdon's sister, and wife of Ben Franklin Grant) took
the remaining three, Coy, Maude and Arnold to live in their home. The children
grew up as brothers and sisters in their respective homes, but actually were
double first cousins.
Eula married Sam Patterson
Sannie married John Westbrook
Dunn married Gerty Grady
Coy married Gladys Benton
Maud married Resprice Herring
Arnold married Sadie Ellis
By Geneva Smith Griffin Dawson, June 1984
Lou cooked on a big wood burning "Home Comfort" stove that had a big
oven. She had a baking pan the size of the oven and would make this pan full of
biscuits each morning with a big pot of rice and hog meat for her big family. She
would cook for herself a little pone of corn bread. She spun thread and wove cloth
to make clothes & other items for all.
One cold morning in 1936, Lou was playing and dancing in her bedroom
in front of the fire place with her grand son, Douglas. She had on a new flannel
dress, she backed up to the open fire to get warm, and got too close when her
dress caught fire. She ran screaming out on to the breezeway fom the house to
the kitchen. Mae was washing dishes in the kitchen when she heard her and saw
Lou with the flames leaping above her head. Mae Smith picked up the dish pan of
water and threw it on her putting the fire out.
Fiason and Susie lived across the road, Faison burst the block in his car
getting Lou to the hospital. The blisters on her back were very big, a frame was made
to hold the sheet up off her body so the blisters could heal. She lived six weeks in
much pain.
