KNOWLES, John, Private, NC Militia

John Knowles of Duplin County served as a private in the N.C. Militia. At the battle of Rockfish Bridge in 1781 he was struck with a sword by a mounted British soldier and his left arm and shoulder almost cut off leaving Knowles sorely disabled.
His name appeared on a list of applicants for an invalid's pension. The application was returned by North Carolina to the U.S. Congress on 28 Feb 1795. Soldier was then living in Duplin County. His pension was for $60 per annum and began 4 March 1794. He received a total of $591.97 before he died 15 Jan 1804. Soldier drew four RW pay vouchers. In the 1790 Federal census for Duplin County, soldier was listed as an adult white male head of house with two white males under 16 years and three white females of all ages. Soldier was married to Frankey___.

Soldier had a brother William who was dead by 1779.
