Excerpts from Pleas and Quarter Sessions of Duplin County Court October 18 1813

    At a County Court begun and held for the County of Duplin at the Court House on
    the third Monday of October, being the 18th day of said month in the year of our Lord
    1813.
    
    Present: The Worship full Robert Southerland, Jesse Grimes, Bryan Bourden, Edward
    Alberson, Edward Outlaw, Esquires
    
    Ordered that Robert Southerland, Jr., an infirm man, be in future exempted from the
    Payment of a Poll Tax
    
    Administration of the Estate of Hallon West, dec'd, is granted to William W. Hill, who
    has given bond in the sum of four hundred [£400] pounds and taken the oath of an
    Administrator according to law. Ordered that Letters issue accordingly. Pd.
    
    Andrew Mcintire, Edward Pearsall and John Hunter, Esq'rs, are appointed a Committee
    to settle the accounts of the Estate of James Maxwell, dec'd, with the Executors and
    make report thereof to this Court this Term.
    
    The Grand Jury, being called, tried, and sworn, answered to their names on the
    panel, to wit:

    Ordered that David Brock, Constable, shall attend the Grand Jury.
    
    Ordered that John E. Hussey, Constable, shall attend the Court this Term.
    
    Joseph Whitfield is appointed Overseer of the Road in the room of William Herring
    and to have the same District and.hands to work under him.
    
    Mordecai Mobley petitions the Court for leave to turn the road off from his cleared
    ground, which is granted.
    
    Ordered that Charles Pearse summons and convene a Jury upon the premises to view
    the 59-meand report to next Court.
    
    Upon motion ordered that Jesse Grimes, Esq'r,·Willis Hines, Alexander Keaton and
    Thomas Wilson a Committee to lay off to Elizabeth Grady one year's provisions of
    her deceased husband's Estate according to law and report to next Court.
    
    The Petit Jury called and sworn, to wit:

    Administration of the Estate of Henry Grady, dec'd, is granted to Edward Alberson, 
    who has given bond in the sum of five hundred [£500] pounds and taken the oath of
    an Administrator. Ordered that Letters issue accordingly. Pd.
    
    Jacob Teachey is appointed Overseer of the River in the place of Asa Murray and to
    have the same District and have the following hands, to wit: Isom Norris, Asa Murray's
    Jim and James Murray's Sutton to work under him.
    
    Asa Murray is appointed a Patroll instead of Wright Boney.
    
    Charles Hooks, David Hooks and David Wright are appointed a Committee to
    examine the accounts of James Reardon, Guardian to Sarah, Rebecka and Serene
    Thomas, minors and orphans of Lewis Thomas, dec'd, and to report to next Court.
    
    David Alberson petitioned the Court for leave to turn the public road round his
    cleared land and that the Sheriff convene a Jury of View upon the premises and
    report the same to next Court.
    
    Deed: Jacob Lassiter to Daniel Witherington for two pieces of land containing in
    the whole 777acres was proved in Court by the oath of Barney Witherington and
    ordered to be registered.
    
    An Indenture from Fereba Stocks to Alexander Saunders, binding herself to him for
    ninety-nine years, was proved in Court by the oath of Mark Rodgers and ordered to
    be registered.
    
    An Inventory of the Estate of Mrs. Hollon West was returned to Court by William W.
    Hill; the Administrator; ordered to be recorded.
    
    Isaac Kornegay, Esq'r, returned his list of Taxables for the present year.
    The Court adjourned till tomorrow morning nine o'clock.
    
    Tuesday Morning '[19 October 1813]
    The Court met according to adjournment.
