James Sprunt School

Contributed by LouGene Hemphill Thursday Morning December 7, 1950 Long-Silent Bell Tower In Duplin

From the tower on this weather-faded old building in Duplin County the voice of a bell called students to their classes for more than 65 years, but that voice has been silenced for more than a quarter of a century. The bell at Kenansville rang out last in 1922 when the James M Sprunt Institute for Ladies closed its doors after 26 years of operation by the educator and clergyman whose name the school bore. The age of the school building is not known. It may be a part of the original Kenansville Seminary established on the site about 1856, or the later Webster Institue that succeeded it. The management of much of the school activity on the historic site was the responsibility of the Wilmington Presbytery. (Whitaker-Leffew Photo)
