Sidney Smith Killed Instantly
Sidney Durant Smith, age 66, of Warsaw was killed instantly Wednesday when
his car left the highway at the intersection of 11 and 111 near the B. F.
Grady School.
Smith was travelling on the highway from Pink Hill toward Kenansville when
his car ran off on the right shoulder of the road for about 231 feet and
hit the drain tile head on. The front of the car hit full force, knocking
the motor backwards and breaking the transmission and drive shaft. he was
driving a 1955 Ford Tudor which was completely demolished.
According to eye witness, Alvin Kornegay, Smith was killed instantly, as
he ran over there as soon as the car stopped and Smith was dead, probably
of internal injuries.
Patrolman Stewart investigated the accident.
Smith is survived by his wife, the former Early Mae Teachey; six sons,
Horace of Berkley, Cal.; Durant of Castro Valley, Cal.; John Harmon of
Salisbury, Sidney and Stanley of Rose Hill; Randall of Warsaw; one
daughter, Mrs. Ray Strickland of Faison; two sisters, Mrs. J. J. Grady of
Kenansville; Mrs. L. C. Miller of Beulaville; one brother, Neal Smith of
Beulaville.
