Valley, Ala. - 1st Sgt. S. O. Whaley, Jr., U.S. Army, Retired, 79, of 
Valley, Ala. died Saturday, Oct. 16, 2004 at East Alabama Medical Center 
in Opelika, Ala.
Funeral services were held on Tuesday, Oct. 19, at Johnson-Brown Funeral 
Home with the Rev. Stanley Duke officiating. 
Burial followed at Fairview Cemetery with military honors.
1st Sgt. Whaley was born in Richlands on June 27, 1925 to the late Shirley 
O. Clara Cavanaugh Whaley. He was preceded in death, in addition to his 
parents, by a granddaughter, Stephanie Whaley; sisters, Rosemary Whaley, 
Louise W. Williams, Sadie W. Gerstemier and Vivian W. Troldahl; brothers, 
Otis O. and Robert D. Whaley.
He retired from the United States Army after 24 years and was a veteran of 
the Korean War and the Vietnam War where he received the Purple Heart and 
Bronze Star. He also retired from the United States Postal Service.
Survivors include his wife of 37 years, Carolyn Whaley of the home; 
children, Pam W. McBride and husband, Chuck, of Cummings, Ga., Steven 
Whaley and wife, Katherine of Smithfield, N.C., Jenny Newman and husband, 
Edward, Jeri Holley and husband, Brad, and Bo Still and wife, Shelia, all 
of Valley, Ala.; three brothers, James R. Whaley of Richlands, Leland M. 
Whaley of Woodstock, Ga., and Harry Lee Whaley of Poughkeepsie, N.Y.; 
eight grandchildren, Michelle Telesco, Jessica Rhodes and husband, Sean, 
Aubrey Whaley, Drew Whaley, Eddie Newman and wife, Tonya, Courtney Holley, 
Jenna Still, and Ty Still; seven great-grandchildren and several nieces 
and nephews.
