Binford Sloan Died Wednesday in J. R. Hospital
Binford Sloan, Sr., of 404 Ramsey Avenue, a resident of Hopewell for the past nine years,
died at 1:10 p. m. Wednesday in the John Randolph Hospital. He was 68 years old.
Mr. Sloan a native of Chinquapin County, N. C., was a retired merchant and farmer.
Funeral services were held yesterday afternoon at the grave in Appomattox Cemetery, the
procession leaving the Shanke Funeral Home at 2 o'clock. The Rev. Henry Gibbons Ruark of
the Methodist church at Red Springs, N. C., officiated assisted by the Rev. A. R. Mayo of the
First Methodist Church of Hopewell.
Pallbearers were W. E. Henry, E. P. Anthony, S. W. Ruark, Hugh Douglas, J. C. Wells, Lester
Childers, R. W. Turner and R. B. Murphy.
Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Virginia W. Sloan; two sons, Binford Sloan, Jr., of Dallas, Texas,
and Francis G. Sloan of Hopewell; one daughter, Mrs. Virginia Sloan Carlon of Hopewell; two
brothers, A. R. Sloan of Wallace, N. C., and J. L. Sloan of Raleigh, N. C.; one sister, Mrs.
Alice S. Hussey of Wallace, and three grandchildren.

Binford Sloan was born 23 Jan 1874 in Chinquapin, Duplin Co, NC, the son of William Herring
Sloan and Martha Gillespie Sheffield. Binford Sloan married 1 Jan 1903, in Duplin County,
Virginia Waites Westbrook.
