Some Descendants of William Sellers Who Was in Tarboro, North Carolina in
1750 by Elizabeth Stone Watters 1974 441 pages
p. 347 Mary Unity Sellers was a daughter of William Sellers of Tarboro, North
Carolina. (1) Another source believed that Mary Unity was a daughter of Matthew
Sellers I and Ester Neal and the granddaughter of William Sellers of Tarboro,
North Carolina. (2)
Mary Unity Sellers was born in North Carolina; the exact date is unknown.
However, the date of birth likely was before 1750. (3)
Mary Unity Sellers married Nathaniel West who was the son of Charles West
and Anna Hasalton who lived in Pennsylvania prior to migrating to Louisiana.
Charles and Anna West’s other children were Roger West who married Anna
Fisher and had a daughter Marie baptised October 29,1802 at age 27;and
Catherine who married Daniel Callaghan and had at least three children.
These were Jesse, born January 21, 1787; Anna, baptized October 21, 1790;
and Brigette. (4)
Nathaniel West, the husband of Mary Unity Sellers, was born before 1750 and
died before 1781.
Children of Nathaniel West, Sr. and Mary Unity Sellers were: UNITY
GENEVIEVE, born 1765, married John Reed and after his death married
James Campbell; CREED, married Marie Le Jeune in St. Joseph’s Cathedral,
Baton Rouge, Louisiana, on April 20, 1801; JOHN; JOEL; WINFRED, married
William Russ and later had a son William, Jr. After William Russ, Sr. died
Winfred married James Hillin and had a daughter Wenny.
Mary Unity (Sellers) West’s death may have occurred prior to the
time that the family emigrated from the Carolinas to Louisiana.
After Mary Unity Sellers West’s death, Nathaniel West, Sr. married
Sarah Bonn. From this marriage was born one child, Nathaniel West, Jr. in
1776. Nathaniel West Jr. married Mary Cochran, daughter of Anthony Cochran
and Marguerite Watson. (5)
Nathaniel West, Sr. died about 1781. After his death his second wife
Sarah Bonn West married Thomas Smilie. There were no children.
