The Beasley Family
Submitted by Susan Prince

My family is through Austin Beasley Sr. b: 1755 d: 1822 Duplin County, NC (about
47 miles southwest of Core Creek, NC). We have found a Augustine Beesley at 7
years old indentured to Benjamin Saunderson, Craven County in June of 1762 who
served with William Rigby as a foot soldier in Craven County, NC and then in 1776,
Austin Beasley is buying his first piece of land from William Rigby and if Augustine
and Austin are the same person, which we think he is, Austin Beasley would be 21
in 1776.
That same year 20 Aug 1776, Auston is a witness to a land sale between Solomon
and Abraham Beasley, the son’s of Solomon Beasley Sr. b: 1707 Beasley Island, NC
d: 1790 Core Creek, Craven County, NC. Solomon Sr. is the son of John Beasley b:
1685 and brother to Oxford b: 1710, William b: 1712, Vienna, and Winifred. This John
Beasley per his 1755 Vendue was married to Winifred. Oxford had two sons, James
b: 1730 and John b: 1731 who in 1741 were raised by his sister Vienna Barber’s
husband and his brother Solomon’s wife Rachael Eda Taylor Beasley’s brother Jacob
Taylor. In John Beasley’s 1755 Vendue, a John and James Beesley are listed and
these would be Oxford’s sons. In Duplin and Sampson Counties during the
Revolutionary War, we find Austin Beasley served from Duplin and a John Beesley
served from Sampson who was from Craven County, NC. This could be Oxford’s son
and possibly the father of Austin Beasley. DNA testing may help solve this question
In Duplin County, NC in January of 1788, Austin Beasley buys from Abraham Beesley
the land on Miller’s Creek and Abraham goes to New Hanover, NC to raise his family.
Austin Beasley Sr. remains there and builds a log cabin and a Grist Mill and buys more
land to build his second plantation. When Austin Sr. dies in 1822, his wife Mary Polly
Hollingsworth Carroll Beasley is willed the land and when she dies, Austin Jr. is willed
the land. On 19 Nov 1834, Austin Beasley sells land to his older brother Bass Beasley
and both are listed from Duplin County, NC. On 20 Nov 1837, Austin Beasley Jr. sells
the last of his land to older brother Bass and now Austin lists that he is from Dale County,
Alabama and Bass is still from Duplin County, NC. This confirms the line from Austin
Beasley Sr. Duplin County, NC and Austin Jr. from Dale County, AL.

The log cabin was built behind the Beasley Cemetery but was moved across the
road and near the Grist Mill and then remodeled during the Civil War era. After
the Grist Mill had burnt down twice and the log cabin was no longer used, it was
sold to Claude Moore and then donated to the Historical Society of Clinton, NC.

Next is something interesting: Austin Beasley Jr. was 10 when his father Austin
Beasley Sr. died in 1822 in Duplin County, NC. Austin Jr. was visiting his daughter
Nancy Bush Beasley Lawrence in Brown County, TX in 1880 during the census and
look what state he lists his dad being born in: VA and mom - Polly Mary Hollingsworth
Carroll Beasley was born in Duplin County, NC. If you look at the next 1880 census
in Brown County, TX, you will find my greatgrandfather George Russell Beasley with
his family. He was traveling to the Territory of New Mexico with his family of 13 from
Dale County, AL. George named his first son Austin and his second Amos Parker
who is listed as no name Beasley in the census. Amos died at 14 of Progeria or
"Old Man's Decease" and is buried in Soledad Canyon with his dad George Russell
Beasley. George Russell Beasley's lists his dad Austin Beasley Jr. as being born in
NC. per the 1880 census. George's wife Sarah Virginia Briley, mother-in-law Mary E.
Briley and brother-in-law Gorden A. Briley were part of the census. George's sister
Irene Missouri Beasley and husband Sam Mauldin along with her older brother's son
William S. Beasley are in the next 1880 census. William S. was the son of William
Reed Beasley who died in Spottsylvania during the Civil War. George's brother Everett
Bass "Bud" Beasley was part of the "Family of 13" traveling to New Mexico but returned
to Alabama before the 1880 census and is found as Elbert (Everett) “Bud” (Bass)
Beasley with wife Mary A. and son John William Beasley in Louisville, Barbour County,
AL. for their 1880 census. The next person is Andrew Newton Agerton who was
married to Anna Martha Beasley, George's older sister. Andrew was sitting next to
William Reed Beasley, Martha and George's older brother in a trench in Spottsylvania,
VA on 12 May 1864. There was a lull in the fighting and William Reed Beasley looked
up above the ditch bank and was shot by a sniper. Andrew wrote his wife back in
Alabama about the loss of William. William is buried in the Confederate side,
Alabama section of the Spottsylvania Civil War Cemetery.
